It would have been possible for someone in 2005 to have had five years experience with .NET.
You are forgetting that Microsoft had a beta program for .NET.
I was a part of it, and have a vivid memory of being in Redmond, for a week in 1999 for a working session with Microsoft.
One of the reasons it is vivid, is because of one session beginning at 4PM where the Microsoft team comes in in flannel shirts and blue jeans carrying a large tub filled with ice & beer.
Then we got an impromptu session by the guy who wrote ASP.NET. It was pretty amazing watching him break the cardinal rule of presentations by slinging code in Notepad & not ever having anything break.

doesn't it depend in what you're looking for Bryian ? 'junior .net developer' could mean 'reads c# and makes coffee' for example - I see a lot of jobs advertised for 'full stack' developers - I don't have ASP.Net experience so that rules me out - 'kids' today seem more interested in JavaScript frameworks - maybe they get a quicker 'hit' ie see something happening by using them - I've never been one for quick gratification

Sorry to hear that. Hope thing get better the next time. Sometime I felt like interview is another opportunity to discover new thing that you didn't know, learn how people ask question. If you don't get the job that fine, at least you get some idea what the employers are looking for. Go back do some study/ homework, be prepared and try another time.

That is not true of the fresh graduates I've come across (In my part of the world graduate means having been to University or Technical College). Unfortunately the problem in Q&A is mostly lack of quality training and formal education. In fact in Q&A there are countless examples of people actually claiming to be senior developers asking absolutely trivial questions.
