I don't think you should be too worried. That has happened to me a few times and I find the fear of temporarily forgetting theses things only increases the problem.
I recently had one of these brainfarts and just couldnt get my password right. I was so certain of it that I couldnt identify what was wrong. Mostly because when I type that PW its from a combination of memory and muscle memory.
What I did was indulging myself in other activities forcing me to not think about it or fretting and then a few hours after I felt "reset" I got it right. Then I reviewed what I misstyped and facepalmed.

On a more serious note: for a couple of years, I travelled to my parents' place every month or two. A rather tiring journey about 4-5 hours by car, most of it on the motorway. On several occasions, when looking at the road signs, I realized I had no recollection of long sections of the motorway that I should have passed! Even when concentrating, I couldn't come up with any memory at all. I'm pretty sure I wasn't asleep - at least not for that much of a distance.
The only explanation I have is that I passed those sections so often, my brain simply didn't bother to record those parts again, as long as nothing special was happening.
Later, I noticed similar occasions when driving to work - a much shorter distance. But most often, when I concentrated on it, I still could remember something.
As for passwords, I occasionally had the experience that a password I often typed without thinking suddenly didn't work, and the harder I concentrated what it was, the more difficult it was for me to remember the actual password. It was like the process of concentrating interfered with my motor memory that let my fingers do the work without actually remembering the password as such.
I blame it on old age and forgetfulness. I now use a password manager and never had that problem again.
As for Alzheimer/Dementia: as long as you can still recognize (and name) your relatives when you see them, and no one reminds you that you 'already told me this 5 minutes ago', you shouldn't worry too much.

I think it comes from Fortran, where, at least originally, the letter defining a variable also defined its type. Any variable starting with I,J,K,L,M, or N represented integers. i & j, being the first of these, just followed through from there.

I remember wondering about it too but didn't delve deeper than letting that thought pass.
Sometimes I use a name instead if its short and descriptive otherwise I try and comment.

From FORTRAN. Variables starting with the letters I thru N were implicit integers in FORTRAN, and were therefore used as loop counters by default.
