Still, I wonder what the code actually looks like, and how if/how it handled obviously wrong data.

What an idiot chart. The percent of households WITHOUT internet who state privacy or security concerns went from 0.4% in 2009 to 1.4% in 2015. In other words, it went from statistically insignificant to statistically insignificant.

It is not that knowledge that would 'force' them to invest in security, it is the fact that they are not financially responsible.
Something they are if we're talking about physical products. Change that, and security will become a sudden priority.

A little over 2 years ago Microsoft announced that they were open sourcing large parts of the .NET framework and as Scott Hanselman said in his recent Connect keynote, the community has been contributing in a significant way. That's 'open' as in 'open'.
