Whale oil beef hooked - the last thing I would have thought of (well, yes, of course it was  ).
In a fit of desperation I moved the wife's laptop to close to the WiFi relay, and plugged in a network cable - and it worked just fine. It seems that for ordinary browsing, including streaming BBC World Service News, everything works just fine, but when it was asked to download a large file (usually a TV program or film) the network card goes slow, and finally goes on strike but I 'aint buying her a new laptop as I suspect this could be residual damage from when she spilled wing one it, that caost me a new keyboard. 
I have now installed a third WiFi thingy, relaying from the second one, close enough to the usual place my wife works from, and connected with a good ol' piece of wire.
I get to live another day!

I'd suggest that replacing the lappie might be a better move - clearly the wine went further than you thought, and there may be more damage in there waiting to express itself.

Further to Griff's comment. A lot of laptop overheating issues are solved by clearing the dust bunnies out of the cooling air path. Hit youtube for a vid of how to disassemble that model if you can't find the relevant manual online.

Most of the laptops I have had have had discrete Wifi adapters that can be swapped out easily - remove a panel on the back, unclip the board and unplug the antenna cable, then replace with one I've picked up for buttons on eBay.

I just extended the CommonFileDialog implementation in the Windows API Code Pack to support adding items to the OK button (Open in the Open File Dialog, Save in the Save File Dialog), and it worked FIRST TIME!
Crazy! I even tested it several times! And it worked each time!
And I did the edits using Notepad++, not VS!
And for those who wonder why I am using the Windows API Code Pack, it is currently the only library I have found that allows using the Common Item Dialogs in .NET, as well as the only library that fully supports the taskbar extensions introduced in Win7. I am planning on using both in my current project (a document editor using DevExpress controls).

Didn't want to have to launch VS, wait for it to figure out what the hell it needs to do, open the project (double clicking projects/solutions in explorer is hit or miss for me, usually [9 times out of 10] results in VS opening WITHOUT the project loaded), and then do the edits.
Even with an SSD and 24G RAM VS 2015 takes about two minutes to load as it apparently has to recreate the MEF cache each time, and then it just sits there for a while.
All the edits were to a single file as well.

Jeez, I would use Notepad++ too. Or maybe SharpDevelop! I haven't used MEF (I guess I should be thankful?) but my VS2015 projects load fast enough, though they are a tad slower than VS2012. Similar config, SSD but with 16GB RAM.

I think there is a bug in saving the cache, causing it to be invalid each time. But still, 2 Minutes on an SSD? Seriously? What is VS doing?
MEF isn't all that bad, the caching system is from VS, not MEF (there are some implementations out there, though).
Looking at the logs, on startup I get a line stating that the MEF cache is corrupted and needs to be rebuilt. Each time.
