How do you decide that this and other free software is purely altruistic?
Always a difficult decision but I cannot see how the company earns its money. Maybe its run by a Chinese philanthropist

In this case, the free version is fully functional - I got the full version because I use it all the time and they deserve something for all their effort.
I guess it's the old "shareware" principle: give it away, and if people want to pay you and maybe get a few extra features (AOMEI Professional is "faster" - can't honestly say I've noticed - but does have a few nifty features I haven't used) then that's profit without having to have a huge marketing budget?

How about a scheduled task that runs a one line .bat file? It doesn't get any simpler.

I use Cobian Backup for me and my company (40 employees) since 10 years. It can be configured as a service for automated copies or as a program for manual ones. Additionally you can choose how frequently you want it to make copies: manually, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly or timed. You have the options for include XXX files (A whole directory, several directories, masks, files) and the same for exclusion. Also Full backups or just incremental. You can make just a copy or compress it in one archive (ZIP or RAR) It is powerful and best of all its free.

If you are willing to share with your dad, I would recommend Crashplan free. You can have your backups sent to your dad and he can have his sent to you.

Robocopy running from a scheduled batch file (as mentioned by others) is a good choice. Also, take a look at Cobian backup. I've been using it for years. It has a built in scheduler so can run unattended. The only possible downside is the backups are stored in ZIP file format so an unzipping application is needed to access the backups. 7ZIP is a freebie that could accomplish that.

Veeam Endpoint Backup is free and does a full-image backup. CrashPlan is another popular option with some good off-site options.

I've been using Macrium Reflect[^] since January, and I'm pretty happy with it: once set up it just works.
Currently my setup is configured to do incremental backups daily and full backups weekly, with a set rotation of 6 weeks (i. e., backups older than 6 weeks get overwritten)
You can freely configure what disk or subdirectories to backup and where to put it (just needs to be on a different drive). If your PC isn't running at the scheduled times, the backup will run the next time you turn it on. When it starts, a dialog will pop up that will let you defer it, but I never really needed that as it doesn't interfere with running applications or even games.
Restoration works pretty well, too, and I even used it once to clone my installation to a secondary SSD.
Speed is great: the initial backup of my fresh Windows 7 installation (~36GB) took ~70s (source: SSD, target: SSHD). Windows 10 was similar. Incremental backups take less than a minute, spending most of the time searching for changes.
The backup data is compressed, and that greatly helps for writing the data onto my SSHD as even a full backup fits into the SSD write buffer. Obviously it would also help in case you wish to store your backup on an USB drive or other external drives with a low(er) bandwidth connection.

I found out in my local (French) builders merchants. It was 8:30 am, and they had bottles of wine open, a coffee urn, raw meats and cheeses, bread and cake.

From the brief look at some MATLAB code I saw it seemed to BASIC oriented with bits O' Pascal & C stuck in to (presumably to get around problems) and I was a little supprised it could create Exe's, Ihave only seen scripts generated...
