I had the same problem, but when I got the B12 shots it made my skin really bad for a while (until my body got "used to it" or something), or at least that's what I blame because it coincided and nothing else changed that might cause it. No change for you?

The first time I encountered it was when I invited some Dutch colleagues over for a meal. They said that they would bring the dessert.
So I fork out around EUR 150 (it was guilders, at the time -- and that doesn't include drinks), and they turn up with a 65-cent carton of vla.
Fortunately, we had some plain chocolate cake, so I cut a few slabs of that, smothered it with the vla, and threw it, covered, into the microwave for five minutes at 50%, which turned it into a "rustic" but perfectly palatable dessert.
They said it was too rich for their tastes.
I never invited them again.

G'day, mate.
We've been vegetarians for generations based on religious beliefs, and our caste (but for me it's more about personal choice and for good health). I have heard of nobody in the known extended family have such deficiencies.
B12 is plentifully available in dairy products (unless you're vegan - vegetarian means vegan food, but including dairy products and honey). Also, B12 supplementation is very common among vegans and you only need one supplemental pill (500 micrograms) per week.
There are also a few vegans in our family (a couple into their retirement), and they're doing just fine. In fact, they're doing excellent for their age and when compared to their friends.

It's a bit of a western problem I think. We always ate meat and I guess most vegetarians just stop eating it without any further changes to their diet, save for the occasional veggie burger. That's not quite how it works.
Besides that, I think the western diet is quite unhealthy as it is, including the meat.
I do eat dairy products, but no B12 supplemental pills anymore (which I'll start with again now)

I wish there were some other way but we are designed to eat meat. It is so good for us. Tough on the old cow/pig etc.
Ever thought of eating fish? Might be a morally acceptable half way point.

Fish are pretty low on the evoloutionary scale so what ever motivated you to quit eating mammals needen't apply to fish, IMO, especially when your health is concerned. Anyway, Sushi is damn tasty!

I think if nature could make such a scale fish would be a lot more important to the ecosystem than people

The results you describe exactly what happen to my Dad when he had a vitamin B12 shot! I'm starting to wonder about the placebo effect did you have any issue with 'stiff' knees as that was what my Dad commented on as being better...
