I have just received a letter from a collection agency.
This is, as best I can tell, related to a visit to an emergency room six months ago.
I am highly annoyed by this because no living human ever called or spoke a single word to me.
This is the first I remember seeing anything from this company.
I'm trying to figure out what this charge is for, and so on.
I am positive that I have paid at least two other bills (from external providers) regarding that one visit.
Am I unreasonable in expecting one bill for one visit ?
What is the name of the authority that oversees such financial behavior of these state licensed professionals ? I would like to use the U.S.Mail as well and send them a letter.

Would you do the same if I sent you another bill? How would you know the difference between a legit bill and some fake?
Unless they can show "when" you ordered your stuff/service, there has been no sale.

Should set off some alarm-bells. I doubt that it is a legit bill.
There's also some law that says that a sale that has been based on misleading the client is a non-sale. I'd reckon that there's something similar in your place. So, again, unless you explicitly agreed to buying stuff/service, there is no sale, and no bill.

Sounds like someone is trying to scam you.
Did you google the collection agency name?
Did you contact the hospital and request a review of your billing?

Each state (even cities according to wikipedia) have their own regulations regarding collection agencies.
Contact your local "Better Business Bureau" office and ask them if the collection agency is legitimate.
Check your emergency room receipts, check your bank statements. It should all add up; and what you paid should be what you owe in the first place.

You should have had a consolidated invoice form the hospital. Check with the billing department.

That would be nice...however...
Hospitals are no longer hospitals. They're big buildings that rent space to the people who work there. So, you'll get separate bills from the hospital itself AND the doctor AND the nurse AND the anesthesiologist (if applicable) AND a lab somewhere if they did any blood pee, or poop work.
None of them ever seem to be timely, either. In the past, I've received bills from procedures over a year old.

A few years ago, my daughter broke her arm. I started receiving letters from insurance saying "we are not paying for this.. and that....". Then I started receiving collection letters for "those" things.
I made some calls to find out what was going on, and the bills from the hospital were FULL of fraudulent charges. Tests that were unnecessary, doctors who weren't there, all kinds of things. The insurance company was fully aware of this (it apparently happens ALL THE TIME) and refused to pay any of it. So the fraud charges were delivered to me.
When I called the hospital to ask about it, they said something like "oh yeah, that happens all the time" and reversed the charges right on the spot.
Forget complaining to them. They know what they are doing. Write to your representatives instead. This is a crime. I should have gone to the police, I don't know why I didn't.

Exactly how they could get that info; I wonder; but then, well, I suppose if I were of that ilk I could figure out such a scheme in a month or two.
