Moore's law combined with ever increasing hardware reliability means that the days of needing to replace a PC every couple of years are long gone. "I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, people like me!"

In a sane world this might be true, but, for better and for worse, there a billion hardware-freaks and status-obsessives out there who will always want the latest gear. Not to mention the party-hacks (tech reviewers) who increase page-views by hyping the latest updated whatever no matter how trivial the improved-increased-faster whatchamacallit ... is.
Meanwhile software stumbles along ever more-bloated, more memory greedy.
Of course, I look on the bright side of things with my one good eye.

BTW I went to lok at the new Surface 4 machines and I want. Better yet, my wife approves when we get back from wunter break.

I own a PC since 1991 and changed it only 6 times, and two of them were for extraordinary reasons (one fried and one I left at home when I moved). 386 -> 486 -> 166 MMX -> Celeron 1700 -> P4 -> i7. My latest PC is a 4.5 years old laptop which I really hope it lasts at least one more year before the hardware fails, it saw a lot of use.
There never has really been the need to replace a PC every couple of years...

As I look at frameworks, I see the ergonomic benefits, but I can’t help but feel that, for many developers, investing in knowledge of the web platform itself is the best long-term bet. Lock-in isn't free

And the worst part is, you end up using framework C to enhance framework B that did some things better than framework A.
Such, for example, is the reason why I looked at rolling my own lightweight SPA -- if I were to request, on every page, the entire minified jqWidgets js file, that is a 2MB download!!! If I don't want it all, I still need about 20 individual components, and that's 20 round trips (at best 2 at a time) to the server. In either case, it's a sh*tload of time spent waiting for the damn js files to download, so to compensate, I end up with a website where the initial page takes a few seconds to load, and I use my SPA "framework" to load pages after that, and it's darn fast.
So yeah, when it comes to web stuff, I can really see the reason for vanilla and framework-less. But then again, what do you when you want a grid with inline editing, filtering and sorting capability, and support for a variety of different kinds of controls? Well, even rolling my own (which is utterly painful) ends up, in the end, creating the same mess.
Moral of the story? Web development sucks.

There is generally an answer to the framework download issue, which is to host the JS and deliver via a CDN. It looks like the jqWidgets team are stubbornly refusing to do this.

You could also process your components on build, so that you end up with a single file with all the components you need.
If even that is too much, you can use a module system like AMD to load the components only when you absolutely need them.

Writing by hand is slower and more cumbersome than typing, and students cannot possibly write down every word in a lecture.
