We still have some control system running DOS software with WfW 3.11 on 486 based PCs (so they are from the mid 90's) and some running Windows sofware with NT4.

If one of the system dies I replace it with a spare system (usually also a 486 or an early Pentium) or just replace the hard disk if that is defective. Each time when that happens (actually about every two years) I have to remember how to install WfW. Therefore I wrote a short HOWTO some years ago and copied the installation disks to a CD-ROM.

The spare systems has been used as normal desktop systems many years ago and has been rescued by me. It is always astonishing how long these old system are working because they are often running for multiple weeks without being switched off. Main failure reasons are the hard disks.

I always thought it would be difficult to find a job when becoming older. But it seems that people like me are rare specialist for such old systems nowadays.
