I get a sense of accomplishment with the things that I create. I enjoy what I build. However, I also get excited by new tools that I use. The things that can make my job easier.
I'm sure Rembrandt loved his paintings but if there was a new brush that allowed him to paint difficult strokes easier then he would love that brush too.
In software, the stuff you build can become tools for others to use. Shouldn't they be as excited about using it as you were for creating it?

As does Apple, and I'm sure many others (to varying degrees - I know Oracles documentation is very poor).
I don't think documentation really has that much impact on me choosing my favourite technology company though. It's not very exciting, is it?

It was the worst phone I've ever had and was the pivotal moment I decided to start moving away from Microsoft.

Really? Why?
I loved the easy tiles interface, menu, etc.
Just simplicity and elegance on a well performing phone.
It had mostly the apps I needed and wanted and they all performed very well too.
The Dilbert app on Windows Phone, for example, is MUCH better than on Android.
I've had Android for a year now and I still (or again, after the new update) find myself looking for settings that should be obvious.
On the Windows Phone I always knew where to look for everything.
And I liked that I didn't get a bunch of useless crap apps pre-installed on my Windows Phone, but I'm not sure how that is now.

As far as Windows Phone 7/7.5 went, it had the following problems:
- The battery/signal strength indicator continually disappeared from view. I had to swipe down at the top of the screen to make it reappear for 10 seconds before it automatically disappeared from view again. Call me old fashioned, but I think it's important to know if you've got signal/battery at a glance. Travelling by train, it was a nightmare going through areas with varying coverage having to keep swiping down to see if I had signal. The fact that they didn't use the space for anything else just made it even more daft.
- The back button(!) - I really hope that they changed this one by now! One Windows Phone 7/7.5, it worked like this: Open up the browser, go to a page, click through a couple of pages. Go to the home screen open an app. Go back to the browser and click the back button. Where does it take you? Back to the previous app! But I just wanted the previous page! Sorry, can't do that.
- Copy and paste was seriously broken.
- Sharepoint integration (Microsoft's own software) didn't work on 7 (they fixed it for 7.5).
- Apps - like you mentioned - we're either non-existent or just plain bad. Facebook was very poor, but the YouTube "app" was just a link to the YouTube mobile site which didn't work well on Windows Phone 7/7.5!
- A square/rectangle is not a design. Metro UI is a wireframe. The design part was (and still is) missing. Added to which, you only got Metro UI on the home screen. Everything else behind the home screen was just a text list. Hello again, 1982!
I remember sitting on the sofa, watching her indoors flick around her iPhone 4S at the time, using loads of good quality apps on a device where you could actually see what was on the screen clearly and where everything was laid out logically - it all just worked, and then I looked down at my sorry excuse for a phone that could do sod-all..
The rest is history

I had an HTC Windows 7/7.5 phone and I don't recall having to swipe to see the indicators. If that was the case, they fixed it in WP8. I had a Lumia 920, which I replaced with a Lumia 1520 (after I dropped the 920 and had to change the glass a couple of times).
The screen is awesome on the Lumia models and I do not see a reason to change my phone. I am seriously disappointed with Microsoft's decision to downsize (or abandon) their phone business.

Not any technology is bug free but the advantage Microsoft having is they were very much old player in the market and has a large number of uses and that's why they get so many votes. Other companies providing healthy competition but still number of users using Microsoft based services is very vast. few days ago we read in the news that USA navy made a billion USD contract with Microsoft to continue support for xp even they have closed it.

It's not even about the number of bugs, but the user experience. Microsoft's track record in this area has always been poor.
The only reason for Microsoft being dominant in the PC market is the fact that it's bundled with every PC by default. It's like the company that makes those cheap plastic reflectors for bikes - you always get them on a new bike and most people keep them - does that make them the best?

2. As far as coding goes the alternatives are generally no better, or worse.

If we were just talking about which is the best IDE company, then yes, I'd agree Microsoft, but the question was "which is your favorite technology company?" - that encompasses more than just the IDE division.

Even beyond this I'd say they are ok or certainly I haven't seen much that is unambiguously better. So if someone says MS are their favourite I wouldn't find it shocking.

Given the recent problems with Metro, Surface, Windows Phone, Windows 10 drivers, Windows 10 privacy, and Visual Studio 2015, I think it's difficult to find a company that has so many problems of their own making. Blackberry is probably the closest I can think of.
Thinking about technology companies such as Space X, Tesla, Lockheed-Martin and other such businesses, Microsoft seems like a dinosaur stuck in the 90's.
But hey-ho, you love what you know, I guess!

Blast from the past. Unlike Apple, Commodore's had better graphics, better sound, the first 80 column display that looked great on the built in CRT rather than having to hook up a cheezy monitor and convert the signal to channel 3, the tape deck actually worked (and no fussing with stupid volume controls on your own portable player) and the C64 had awesome graphics and sprite animations for the time. Their floppy disks had 2x to 4x the capacity of Apple's crappy drives, and a real IEEE interface was built into every PET.

I'd love to see Commodore make a comeback. I always wondered why AmigaOS was never really pushed forward to get it on a par with Linux. The current(?) AmigaOS seems like it needs some loving
