I always like to know how - it adheres to my world view that the majority of managers don't deserve their remunerative salaries or, on occasion, their actual jobs.

At least for me this is a big question 
A very big international company offered me to have an interview, and I would be very happy .... but it is quite far from my place; the option are:
-drive for 6 hours, have the interview and then drive back for other 6 hours, 200 euro
-take a plane, 3-4 hours per trip (connection delay), much more comfortable, 500 euro
By the way my monthly wage is around 2000 euro, so the costs could be important
The question is... in case I should opt for the plane, should I ask the company for a reimbursing policy or just take all the risk on my shoulders without mentioning the costs?

Put a big box on a pallet.
Phone a palletised freight distribution company.
Get in the box.

You're in Italy?
I used to work for a palletised freight network that operates in Italy (I installed all of their servers and converted the software to work in Italy / Italian some years ago), I'm sure I could persuade them to take good care of you.
And if you do get squished, you'd be insured.
