I have no idea of protocol either - my situation wasn't in QA, was on articles.
Once got down voted for posting a comment on an older article which helped me with a problem I had. I only wrote it because I voted 5 on the article to reflect the assistance I got from it.
I mean it's not as if reputation means too much to me - it was just a few points, I don't really care. I just found myself thinking about what have I done wrong in this case.

Have heard today's kids telling "I am not a nerd".
Two questions: (from your personal experience, and not from Internet resources, please):
1. When kids use this term, what exactly would they mean?
2. Is it so bad to be termed a nerd?
Had never heard this term as a kid; I'm nearing 50.

Nerd or geek, who gives a fluff. Just don't go be getting yourself labelled a dweeb.

1. Whatever is 'current' in their social sphere. Could be clever, too clever by half, swot, teacher's pet, idiot ...
2. Depends what they mean by the term.

Geeks are now considered to be cool. I am not sure about nerds, or the difference.
A friend of the our family asked me to create a Minecraft Server for her son using his name; "Jacob's Minecraft Server". He was in primary school (10 year old) at the time and the server made his popularity rise.

Just look at the people who try to make fun of those nerds. Most of them are dumb enough that one could easily imagine them sitting on top of a tree with a banana in their hands. Ask the 'nerds' (which no doubt are present here) and they will tell you that they would never trade their intelligence against the 'normal' life of the other primates.

If you are at a dev conf with 100 other programmers/geeks, being called a nerd is usually a compliment. If you are in high school, and the girls in your class think you are a nerd, that's probably not such a good thing
