I agree for the browsers part but I strongly disagree about the .NET not being cross-platform! Microsoft does its best to make it fully cross platform and the releasing of the .NET source code proves this. All you need for a true cross platform solution is a nice presentation layer on top of that and thus you will be able to write your code only once and run it on all major desktop platforms - Windows, Mac and Linux.
