I've reached the age where I buy new toys only to replace those that have met their demise.
2015 started with my trusty circa 2002 Panasonic HDD video recorder unceremoniously dying (fried processor board) after recording a 5 hour program (day 1 of the Barrett-Jackson auto auction), rendering 30 hours of video permanently unwatchable. Soon after I discovered I can no longer receive my favorite talk radio station (680 AM), because a high-rise that's being built near my home now obscures its reception. (I can receive other stations, but I rely on 680 to wake up.)
So...
Nothing lifts the spirit more than the smell of new electronics...

My Nexus 7 isn't loud enough. Also, I TuneInRadio (a great free for listening to radio) doesn't seem to be reliable when it comes to its alarm.

Mine is - you know you can set the alarm volume independently of the "main" volume?
(open Clock, select Alarm, press the "three dot" settings button, and there is the Alarm volume setting)

Yes, I know. Maybe it's because I keep my Nexus in a (book-like) case... 
Besides, it's actually easier to hit a physical snooze button with one's eyes closed instead of opening them to touch the screen.

That's kind of the idea - you have to be a minimal amount awake in order to turn it off! 
I have a backup though: a old fashioned wind-up alarm clock with the two bells on the top. Just the thought of that firing up is enough to get me out of bed!

NOw that I'm retired my hours are erratic and I rarely need to get up at a certain time. For the last few weeks, because I'm working on a project it's been up at 11AM and to bed at 5AM.

My only interruption has been a tooth that needs to be pulled but to stubborn to go to dentist so have been living with extreme pain. But project is getting close to completion!

Seriously, you still had a VCR? In 2002? That's a little...old tech. I think I had converted all my VHS stuff to DVD by the end of 2004, and retired those in favour of HDD stored AVI files a couple of years later. The amount of space saved each time was a leading factor: VHS was so bulky, and so were DVD's in comparison with a six by four by 2 inch box holding a 500GB HDD.
Now I have Sky+, Chromecast and 4TB of NAS to play with...

The Panasonic was brand new when I bought it in 2002 (could've been 2001 - not sure). At the time, there were a dozen HDD video recorders made by Panasonic, Pioneer and Sony. I recall Sony's were the crappiest. Today, there seems to be only one (Magnavox - manufactured by Funai).
But until 2000/2001 I recorded on a high quality (4 head) VCR.
BTW, PVRs are a rip-off (pricewise), at least in Canada.

I do have a better device for waking me up, albeit more expensive - my wife. This device has the added advantage that it includes tea and toast delivery.
Before I get comment about how unfair that is: She snores so loudly that I need 30dB earplugs and I can't hear an alarm!
