Winston Churchill was a statesman, not a politician. The difference between them is that a politician thinks of the next election (and the hell with the next generation), while a statesman thinks of the next generation, even at the cost of the next election.
I could give numerous examples both past and present, but that would be trespassing on Soapbox territory...
