Edit: You english people are evil... how come that the short form of sergeant is sarge? And then you wonder that poor non-english speakers like me don't say it correct? (BTW the spanish word is "sargento")

It's probably historical: the word "sergeant" probably was spelled with an "A" rather than an "E" a couple of hundred years ago.

It's like the English county "Hampshire" is abbreviated to "Hants", because it used to be called "Hantonscrire" or "province ruled from the town of Hanton". "Hanton" became "Southampton" and the county changed with it, but the abbreviation stayed the same.
A lot of English does stuff like that!

In english films it sounds like an "A", that's why I wrote it like that.

There is also a tradition in the UK army that "non-coms" - non commissioned officers, sergeant and below - don't get called "Sir" by lower ranks: the traditional reply being "don't call me 'Sir', I work for a living!"
