To other uk CPians, I don't know if you are the same in your area, but this year, the postal services is unbelievably slow. Items are taking days longer than usual, even taking into consideration the time of year.
I don't know if this year there is an even bigger demand due to online shopping, but everything is just sooooo sloooooooowwwwwww.........

Is it just an up 'ere thing, or is it the same with you (wherever you are)? Still waiting on stuff that was ordered on 1st December!

The Post Office's targets of next day for first class mail and two days for second class are suspended during December, so putting first class stamps on Christmas cards is a waste of money.

Not strictly true, I worked in the sorting office in the run up to Christmas one year, and all the 1st class was sorted before we even touched the 2nd class stuff. If anything the 2nd class will be delayed longer than the 1st class.

A friend of mine has cancer and is receiving treatment. She works for an NPO (not for profit organization) that have provided her with a laptop can can take home. However, some portions of her job require functions to be completed only from her computer that is on site at her work desk.
So, what would you recommend for remoting software to allow her to access her on-site computer from home? Any help is appreciated.

For Windows?
- Remotedesktop (comes free with windows)
- TeamViewer (only free for private use)
- RealVNC (only free for private use)
TeamViewer is probably easiest to setup as there is no need to make the remote machine accessible by an ip address and port. Only requirement is that the machine is actually running.
For remote and realvnc you have to make the machine accessible by an ipaddress / port.
Depending on the setup you might want to configure Wake on LAN on the remote computer (including a firewall rule in the firewall/router etc. of the remote network) so you don't have to run the machine 24/7. And you might want to setup a VPN for that connection.

I use RDP alot, I can RDP to my laptop I forget at work once in awhile and just continue working like i am sitting at my desk.
I need the fully qualified name of my laptop. Computername.DomainforWork.com

+1 for remote desktop - we use it at work, and it seems to work well for windows boxes...

Yeah. We use it at work too, especially useful as you even get multi-desktop support and the resolution of the remote machine gets adjusted to your local resolution (that's where a lot of other software is lacking and scrolling on a desktop or manually selecting the monitors is not really fun )

I'd go for Teamviewer also.
Remote Desktop requires some type of VPN or to open holes in the corporate network to allow it to connect across the web.
Remote Desktop is awesome when everyone is on the same network (including vpn access). Teamviewer is awesome when crossing those boundaries.
