I like CP, and I'd be shattered if it was to shut down now like some other sites have done. So in effect I am a stakeholder in CP's future like many other "CPians" are.
I'd like to hear Chris announce oneday that CP is doing OK financially oneday as I do worry about this. But I don't think this will happen.
Owners of sites like CP in the past really made there loot on the speculative capital gains rather than direct trading, but since the dot com bubble burst this is not so easy.
So my suggestion is that CP mix code with pr0n to earn revenue.
We all know that what really drives the Internet is the Pr0n industry, just like games push the hardware industry.
I'm unsure how pr0n would be mixed with code but I'm sure a way could be found.

mmmm well maybe there could be too versions of CP
the Adult version and the restricted version.
The Admins obviously know how many CP members flick between code articles and pr0n sites. So it makes sense to try to hold the members at one site.
Everyone says they don't use prositutes or review pr0n etc, but in reality the sex industry is massive and it must be getting it's support from somewhere.
Do you have any other ideas how CP or other sites could be more financially viable. Its a massive paradox really that we gain so much from the information available on the web but nobody expects to pay for it. (I'm the same)

Another way could be to do something like let people get contract work through CP and CP gets a small commission for each project. People come here looking to get something done and find some coders here who are up to the task. Good for both the coders and the people who want to get things done quickly. Something like an open auction or something can be implemented and allow people to bid on projects.
Pr0n is OK, but totally unrelated to the theme of the site. 
Other things that can be done are giving people CP mail addresses for a small amount, getting out a CP-zine, where people write articles (selected by Chris and a few others). Getting people some hardware deals (lots of people buy new hardware all the time) is also a way. The hardware will be stored and sold from the other site, but CP can earn some money by sending people to those sites. Lots of people would like to write shareware apps. Do something for them. Let them sell it through CP, or provide a page for them where they can put a description about it, but which doesn't cost as much as a full blown advert, etc.
Or just let people donate some money to let CP running. A lot of people would like to do that, but can't do it right now.
But then, make it too commercialised and you cross a fuzzy line somewhere when you start losing the charm and what pulls people to this place. The main purpose of the site will get lost and diluted.
I agree with you that making money on the percieved value, rather than the actual dollar value may not last long.

If the average CPian donated $5/year or the membership was $5/year, it would add up to $1,750,000/year. There is absolutely no reason why we would need to add dirty stuff to CP to make it financially viable.

I thought that was why we keep him around...
Besides, how could it hurt? We could have a special club with its own forum but requiring a credit card to enter. For the truly twisted, we could get David a 900- number so they can call him at all hours of the night to hear him curse at them and generally talk dirty for a per minute charge. Lots of possibilities here!

But on a serious note how the hell are most of these websites and services going to survive. I guess CP is out of the danger zone by now. However the fact that making a return from web-based ventures has become so difficult, is really stifling entrepreneurship .

This other site I visit regularly recently went through a major change. Part of the site is that people leave comments on a photo, what they think about it etc. Next to each comment you can vote wether that comment was helpful or not. So like a rating system on comments. Before you could not see who voted for your comments, but now after the change you can see the list.
Most everyone predicted it would be a really bad idea, generate bad blood etc. Strangely though in practice people have been pretty rational about it. Sure there have been a few nuts who get all frothy at another person for voting them down, but thats life. All in all it has had a positive effect as now people vote properly, thinking before they do.

Hey Chris,
I was just reading a few bloggs the other day and I thought it would be nice if people could view my personal forum as being a blog... As such, would it be unfeasible, for whatever reasons, to have rss feeds [or similar] from people's personal forums.
I think it'd be a nice idea, although, depending on it's usage, it could cause strain on the servers.
