I don't like and don't dislike Windows 8.1.

Windows: Life Without Walls[^] was, once upon a time, a marketing campaign of MicroShaft.
When I heard of this via a radio spot, I *immediately* conceived a parody commercial based upon this very marketing campaign statement, that being "Windows: Life Without Walls".
Here is that commercial, text-only version (yeah, ya gotta use yer imagination...):
Scene I
[Camera view: From 1000 feet, zooming in on a non-descript computer operating system company's office (non-descript logo on building's side) in a town not unlike that of, say, Redmond, Washington, USA]
A computer operating system employee (COSE) is getting off work, walking out to & getting into his eco-friendly car & driving off toward the nearby evergreen pine tree-laden mountains.
Scene II
[Camera view: Somewhere in the nearby evergreen forest]
COSE drives into a "clearing" amongst the evergreens, gets out and meets with a home developer who then holds up plans for a home, pointing here & there. They both nod in concurrence.
Scene III
[Camera view: from a simple distance showing most, and sometimes all, of house in various construction stages; hammering and other construction sounds in the background]
COSE & developer 20 ~ 30 feet from house, off in the nearby-distance here & there watching progress, nodding in approval.
Scene IV
[Camera view: The nearby evergreen forest where the home is being developed]
COSE, in eco-friendly car, drives into once "clearing" where now a new, bright & shiny 2-story house exists.
He gets out, the developer hands him the keys, they shake hands, and developer drives off.
Scene V
[Camera view: Just outside front door, facing front door]
COSE enters home.
[Camera view: Now inside, from larger Great Room area, facing COSE]
COSE walks into the center of the Great Room, viewing the outside "nature" through the various large windows, some nearly the height of the 2 story home.

[Camera view: back inside on COSE, 10 feet away and 10 feet high]
Camera begins to pull back and up, going "through" larger 2-story windows to the outside, up to about 200 feet high; COSE can't be readily seen; hold camera for 3 ~ 5 seconds to allow the sounds of nature to set in.
All the walls suddenly disappear, leaving just the windows suspended in mid-air, with clear view of COSE standing in the middle of them all.
Scene VI
[Camera view: about 15 feet away from and 10 feet above COSE, with several of the larger 2-story windows in the background]
COSE has exceedingly startled look on his face as to where and why in the hell all the walls just up and disappeared.
[Hold camera for 2 ~ 4 seconds while...]
COSE looks around in stuttered & confused amazement.
[A sudden mildly rushing whoosh of wind is heard, then massive breaking of glass all around as windows fall to the ground quasi-violently shattering all over the place.]
COSE puts hands/arms over head to "protect" himself, ducking down to the ground (he's far enough away he's not hurt).
After a few seconds, COSE begins to look out from under his arms, slowly standing up, hands/arms coming to in front of him (hands facing outward a little as if to be readily available once again to protect himself) all the while still in utter confused astonishment. House keys can be seen dangling in one hand.
[Camera slowly pulls back and up to about 100 feet high, showing full area of the home's foundation, and then some, with scattered broken glass everywhere.]
COSE is standing in the middle of the chaos that just occurred, looking around.
[Fade in larger-print statement.]

Fade to white.
Fade in non-descript competitor operating system company logo.

I will vote NO until:
1.The Left-Click Start Menu from the 7 days is given back to us.
2. The stupid charms bar is never seen.
- Don't "inform" me about 3rd party utilities such as classic shell - everybody knows that.

I am still stuck in a world of Windows XP and Windows 7. At work, we finally got rid of all of the XP machines and moved on to Windows 7. Windows 8 or 8.1 (or 8.anything)? We are going to skip that unless we are forced, kicking and screaming, to move to it. We plan to wait for Windows 9.
At home, I hope to retire my XP machine later this year, if I can save the money. I work for a .org, so you can guess how big my paycheck is..... 
Lord, grant me the serenity to accept that there are some things I just can’t keep up with, the determination to keep up with the things I must keep up with, and the wisdom to find a good RSS feed from someone who keeps up with what I’d like to, but just don’t have the damn bandwidth to handle right now.

I think you have hit one of the main nails on the head there. And the main problem with touch screens, is that people and companies do not have, and are not intending to acquire, them for PC use.

After about an hour, it was decent to use. I find it easier to find things by clicking the Microsoft button and typing what I want instead of clicking the start button, waiting, and then scrolling up and down trying to find what I need.
Personally, I like it a lot, but I find Windows Server 2012 a bit hard right now. It too will take some time to get used to.

A fellow commuter was asking me how hard it is to change back from Win8 to Win7 on his laptop.
He hates the thing, specifically mentioning the tiles.
I had personally believed that the mortals would like Win8 because it's so shiny and child-like in appearance. I guess that, with use, even they get nauseated.

Personally, it took time for me to adjust, but I prefer Windows 8.1 to Windows 8. I think that the main problem is still the whole "Metro" interface, although it's easier to get around it in Win8.1

I find it cool, nice UI, nice file management features and all but the truth is that I couldn't care less.
Windows 7 just works for me and I'm planning to keep it for a long time.
In fact I think I might skip a windows version for the first time after 3.11

Win8 was stupid, on a desktop. On a tablet, or a phone with a nice clear, small touch screen and big fat fingers it works fine.
On a desktop, with two 22" non touch monitors and a mouse? No thanks. A massive backwards step in UI design compared with Win7.
So...out comes the 8.1 update, after only a year of paying customers says "no - I'd rather upgrade back to Win 7". Is it enough? No. It's better than Win8 was - but it's still a PITA to use in comparison in many ways, and feels like a hurried "bodge".
They clearly didn't listen again - no surprises there - but you would have thought that after the Vista fun and games they would have at least tried sooner and harder.
I'll wait for Whine and see what we get there - I skipped Vista completely, so I'll probably do the same with Weight.

I got win7 and it works for me.
I don't see any reason why I should change to win8.
If a big hype is made about win9 and everyone loves it, then only will I get it.
But none was made about win8.

Personally, the improvements to memory usage and file performance more than justified the effort of installing a Start Menu replacement. The "Modern UI" is an awful idea on a desktop system - I never touch it.
