Personally, the improvements to memory usage and file performance more than justified the effort of installing a Start Menu replacement. The "Modern UI" is an awful idea on a desktop system - I never touch it.

From the criticism against win8.x it seems to me that I would be reverting back to horse riding once I move over. I'm fairly happy in my car thank you!

I feel discriminated against, there should be an option for those of us who have never touched an 8.* system. I work in a financial institution - super conservative with their OS. I bought my last home system just as 8 came out and it has not worn out yet.
 I suppose I will have to get one some time but I figure to hold out for W9, I managed to duck Vista so I'm on a roll here.

Window is a product so versioning is ongoing thing, but How many of us really knows the difference between win8 and win8.1. ?
Few months back me and my friend had same confusion about windows 2008 and windows 2008 R2, So the main question remain unanswered, How efficiently we deal with Windows ? Do we really use/take advantage of each functionality present in windows ?
I have seen many peoples installed Windows server 2008 on their laptop and use it for multimedia purpose, playing songs, videos

Knowing the difference ... maybe not.
The user experience difference much more. Since upgrading from 8 to 8.1 most of my metro apps stopped working, including the store itself. This is more than annoyance. I tried resetting the store, resintalling stuff, clearing caches and download folders. Nothing seems to work. Microsofts response : reinstall Windows, which will cause you to lose all applications and downloaded content, but keep your documents. The documents are the least of my problems. The downloaded and installed 1,5Tb of applications poses a much more serious concern.
To top it off, I downloaded (through Windows update) a new hotfix over the weekend, hoping it would resolve some of these issues. It turns out that I can't open ANY metro apps anymore. Even Minesweeper is bombing out now (pun intended).
I really don't want to go through a reinstall again after just 2 months. 
My plan is to live forever ... so far so good
