Interesting. My data works fine in Colombia and in Suriname, but I haven't tried it elsewhere in the world. It is expensive, though - $US 20 for 10 MB, if I recall.

It strikes me its a long way from Ireland to the continent and the cost of getting it over there plus the running costs are greater than the cost of hiring one. Heck, even from France to the UK its cheaper to fly and hire than to drive, and you get to thrash the tits off a hire car, which as Clarkson says, are always far quicker than your own. 
Anyway, I am sure mr twatter wont be that put out at having to pack an additional sat nav unit, its not as if he has to pack two; one is built in so it is no more onerous than packing one in a car that didn't have one.

Depends on the size, I guess - hiring a Fiesta is cheap enough, but who actually wants to drive one of them? (I had to for a month last year and still haven't forgotten how poor it was, apart from the engine)
If you want something big enough for a family with two growing girls (and a Ladies whole wardrobe and shoe collection) then the rental costs start to pile up - as do the baggage fees at the airport.

I find small cars today are really well equipped and handle, drive and go perfectly well enough. If you can do 90 on a motorway with the aircon on and in good comfort what more do you need?
Perhaps boot space is a bit limited, but that's the only drawback.
Anyway, doesn't mr twatter live in or around London? I find it odd he has an Irish car, and if he did, does putting a sat nav unit on the dash, in addition to the built in one, actually inconvenience him at all?

The Fester I drove (a brand new 2013 model with 200 miles on the clock) was well equipped, yes. It was just badly designed. The roof line is too low (so I bang my head getting in, and I'm not tall), and slopes down to the back to make it rakish and sleek looking - so the rear window is so tiny that it's useless for seeing out when you try to park. So you need the (optional) parking camera system - which wasn't fitted to save costs when buying it. The radio / cd / USB was good, but the controls were laid out so you couldn't easily work them without arms like a orang-outang, and the voice control was ok, but so slow to recognise what I wanted that I ended up shouting at it. In fact, all the controls seem to have been laid out to look good, instead of be easy to use. The drivers seat is weird: like sitting on a waffle plate which is probably excellent for long journeys, but a literal PITA for short ones. No DVD for kids in teh back, which it a PITA on a long journey. The cruise control is stupid: it needs too many buttons to turn it on, and it doesn't have a "no more than" feature which I find really handy to protect my licence! Even starting it is silly: You have to hold the clutch down. Why?
Damn good engine: 1.3 Diesel, but I'd have believed it was a 1.6 petrol if I'd been told that. Doesn't get anything like Mr Fords fuel consumption figures though!
USB connector was very good.

I hired one of these last year, unbelievably quick, and economical, didn't like the handling though. The interior was more design than function, but it worked well enough for me.
Current hire car is a kia I 20. Nice handling, very chuckable, decent enough engine, and very economical. They are great little cars really, they have improved so much in the last 20 years you wonder why one needs a big saloon.

Depends on the costs: Ordinance Survey[^] charge by the map (and that's town-by-town data) so if they aren't going to sell many, then they charge accordingly. And they won't sell many (because it's now free with Android) except in cars where the equipment can't be easily changed, so they up the costs again (and probably have to provide a cut to the car manufacturer, or vice versa, which ups the price yet again.) Ain't rampant capitalism wonderful?
