That is very sad, particularly because these people died at a relatively young age. I wonder if there is anything in the nature of a career of working on a platform, or in the type of people who self-select to become career platform workers, which is associated with reduced mortality ?

I have a feeling that in 2 out of the 3.....that may have something to do with it. 
For me, having kids made a massive change in my lifestyle, particularly on the partying front. It use to be 2 or 3 weeks of 18 hour a day boozing, 300+ units a week was not uncommon. (Recommended male maximum is 35units/week).
There was definitely a live fast, party hard, die young mentality through the whole of the 90's. I miss the whole experience of it...it is very hard to put it into words.
Now though, all grown up (sort of!) with wife and kids, things have naturally moved on in the right direction.

Very sad to hear, Dave, but it's something one has to get used to as we age. It seems now that not a week goes by that I don't see an old friend or acquaintance on the obit page of the newspaper. One day, I suppose, it will be my turn, but I don't expect to read it. It's much more difficult when they're so young, though.
