It's a PITA getting new appliances, isn't it?
Last time I bought a new cooker / stove it was two inches wider than the old - not a problem, I'll just have to move one unit over two inches...
Why do people not tile under units? And when you tile a floor, and you use partial tiles so you don't have to tile under a single narrow unit, could you please get "spares" or buy tiles that will stay on sale for a few years?
A nice simple job takes a week to do if you don't...

And here I was thinking "chainsaw" when you said the new 'fridge wouldn't fit. 
Your story reminds me of a time I helped a friend get an old refrigerator out of a basement. The basement steps had been replaced and the doorway modified since the refrigerator had been placed downstairs. It took us a couple hours, a couple 'come-along's, and partial disassembly of the doorway to get the thing out.

GF is looking for a laptop; basic, usable laptop for mostly Office work; she already have a iPad for "entertainment".
All the tablets we looked at were running windows 8(.1) and some of them have tactile displays (useful ?)
I have to admit, I was completely lost at the stores today looking at the different lower-end CPUs!!
What is the lowest CPU I need to look at ? i3 or i5 ? what are the equivalent AMD cpus (Quad-Core A4-5000?) ?
I assume I need 8gig ram for Win8.1; HD size/speed is not really an issue.
Portability and battery life is not an issue.
The ACER Aspire series seems to be getting nice reviews in the $500-$600 price range.
The Lenovo Flexpad is also getting nice reviews.

If portability is not required, you will get more bang for your buck with a desktop... 
As with everything, set your budget then get the most ram, biggest HDD and fastest processor you can with your money!!

I would set the budget then go for the best you can get for that amount. I'd hate to try and spec a machine at the low end, the variations are mind boggling. I would assume that EVERY laptop you could buy will do the minimum you are asking for.
We bought one a few years ago, a net book I think they were called, it did everything we were after and was light and easily portable. It was only ever used for travel as we use a tricked up desktop at home. We then got a laptop that I could use for development, just. Total waste of money, it only ever gets used for email and browsing.

I'd go for the i5 and the bigger size ram. Then I would try to get one of those SSD drives (if budget still allows) and just buy a robust USB drive for my data.

I come across this often enough, the huge fonts, little content, infinite vertical cheezy text and graphics that sort of fits in "chunks" on my monitor...
Personally, I think they suck. There's usually nothing meaningful on them, etc.

Ah yes, Bootstrap abuse.
Don't get me wrong, I like and use Bootstrap. Even in it's un-skinned form. Things like the grid layout and the nav menu components make it too easy to not use.
But when someone starts using the same actual layout as the Bootstrap site? That sort of thing needs to be addressed with large quantities of fire.
