Ah. And you'll be hauled off to the naughty step...
Take a cylinder, as tall as it is wide.
Cut two wedges off it, so it has a triangular profile, but a round bottom.
It will now fit through a round hole, a square hole, and a triangular hole, provided they all have the same "height".

Well if you are going to bodge it and have a heavy enough hammer either?

Square peg in round hole area ratio is:
2*r^2/pi*r^2 = 0.6366
Round peg in square hole area ratio is :
pi*r^2/4*r^2 = 0.78529
where r is radius circle.
Therefore I submit a round peg in square hole is better fit.

Nice. If this were Q&A your answer would be accepted.
Now, why did I need to know that?

No, 3 other people would copy and paste the exact same answer in the hope that THEY would get the points...

... except I think the area of the square peg in a round hole is half what you think:
diagonal of square = 2r
using Pythagoras:
side = √((2r)2/2) = √2r
area = √2r * √2r = 2r2
I think [missed final 2]

2r does not produce area.
Area of the square within circle is diagonal^2/2 == (2r)^2/2

I fixed my answer, still not 4r2

Agree 4*r^2/2

I read this initially as "I can speak from personal experience."
I was about to ask you to expand on this and then realised that you used "Can't" and not can.
Quite frankly I feel a bit disappointed.

As developers we recommends the square peg in the square peg (as well the round peg in the round hole). However you could obtain more interesting answers from project managers.
