I suggest you read thar book and re-think what you said. A niche is also a market. If you can make enough money from that niche market, fine.

You mention several critical applications (medical, air traffic, etc.).
These markets are the worst laggards at all: very much regulated (BTW for good reasons) and it's huge effort/investments to go into that market. Not the technology but the prove that it does not cause any harm in any circumstances to anyone: the whole infrastructure must obey that regualtory requirements: your wireless communication, your energy supply, your backup if no communication/no battery in the middle of something, your database access and integrity, ...
For that niche market, you don't need to do adds in the public - there are conferences for that.
Or do you see adds for endoscopes with super cutting edge technology in enabling whatever diagnostics or surgery, etc.? No.

The smartwatch is something else: it's clearly targeted to the mainstream, not the niche. Same for google glass. Cross that chasm from geeks to the majority and you are the hero.

BTW: As you easily found out, I'm a laggard in the meaning of "Crossing the Chasm" Wink | ;-)

I would be concerned if iPads or alike would be used as mission critical devices. iPads are consumer electronics devices with a BOM made of the cheepest parts available in the world. If one fails, replace the whole gadget. The whole software machinery is not designed/suited for mission critical control. Just because the look and feel is nicer on a consumer electronic device does not mean it's suited for any thing. We could argue: if there was the need for sexier look and feel of mission critical devices, it would have been done already - maybe there is some company providing these already. As a provider of such devices, you would avoid any bells and whistles since this is unnecessary additional burden to prove safe in any aspect and not disturbing/impair the mission critical function in any way. Maybe I'm wrong.

Looking at the computer to check your email/Facebook/Twitter/whatever status became too much hassle, so the status went on your phone.

Then pulling your phone out of your pocket became too much hassle so the status went on your wrist.

Then pulling your sleeve back became too much hassle so the status went into your glasses.

When moving your eyes a bit becomes too much hassle, where will we go next?

We seem to have made different experiences. I'm not a technology denier - I have my audio equipment etc.
And I see all the sections with huge TVs, especially now with the upcoming Soccer World Championship in Brasil (We go to public viewing here in town when I feel like to have fun in the crowd Wink | ;-)

- no need for a private session Wink | ;-)

).

But back to topic: Thinking of my social environment, it's maybe 1 out of 20 not having any TV. If this is extremly rare is your decision.

BTW: I looked up the statistics for my home country (Switzerland): it says that about 8% do not watch TV at all (zero hours a day). So, I seem not to be far off Wink | ;-)

Luckily, the world is diverse Smile | :)

. Not to judge that one is better than the other - everyone has to make his decision.
Energy saving is a big topic in Europe/Switzerland, so, having multiple TVs is considered inappropriate to a certain degree.
