We have a WNR2000 (forgot the version, guess it is 3 or 4) at home. It's nice, and it has done a good job so far.
As most of modern routers do, this thing has the option of automatically installing Firmware-Updates, which ain't bad - There are too many routers with bleeding security holes out there. What is not nice is the fact that the bloody thing resetted itself to factory settings as the FW Update was installed

WLan settings: Lost
Any other possible settings: Lost

Didn't it warn you to save config? My (old) Netgear ADSL/Wifi router did when I updated firmware a while back.

There is a fairly old backup. The deal is that the new routers allow you update the firmware automatically (They don't tell you that there is an update, but install it immediately), which is pretty useless if you have to import your settings after it happened. Would it be *that* difficult (for the Firmware) to export the settings to a local store on the router and re-import them after the update?

No - The 2000 describes the model, and not the manufacturing year (the WNR2000 is also sold as N300).
V4 is the fourth revision of the model, and I bought the router about a year ago.

Is this not a ... security hole ? I mean, if I can externally access your router in some way to install another firmware on it, it does not sound safe

I guess it is rather the router which pulls the firmware from a Netgear server and then installs it, which is considerably save (at least for home routers).
And by definition, even to configure it you need to access your router "from external" since you can't hook a screen / keyboard to it

Yep, something along the lines "This router will upgrade itself within the next 5 days. You'll need a backup because our programmers did not manage to implement a proper upgrade mechanism."

36 updates were installed on my Windows 7 64-bit computer yesterday and for some reason, the start up time has gone up considerably. Anyone else facing this?
And, even in Outlook 2010, if I flag an email for follow up, there is a message that Outlook 2003 could not find category for follow up (or something like that). Funny.

I didn't like Windows 8 on the desktop, but now that I have a touch laptop using 8.1, I can finally use it properly, and I LOVE Windows 8 now!
My only complaint is the lack of apps and the poor quality of apps when I go into tablet mode!

You should review what updates were installed. Most likely is either a KB update affecting/being adversed by some add in (most common cause), or could be a new component added to Outlook, such a Hotmail connector, which may perform additional work (looking up for Hotmail accounts, contacting live.com etc.). Hard to say without hands-on the local machine.
