I am working on a bunch of MSBuild project files that were created from scratch. We are in the middle of upgrading to Visual Studios 2013 so a lot of the paths to libraries need to be changed. I am having trouble with the Microsoft Libraries because of the spaces that are in the path.
Here is the line that sets the base of the path to get appended later in the project file:
<CRT_LIB_PATH>C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 12.0\VC\lib</CRT_LIB_PATH>
Later there are lines similar to the following:
<LINK_LIBS>$(LINK_LIBS) '"$(CRT_LIB_PATH)\msvcrt$(DEBUG_SUFFIX).lib"'</LINK_LIBS>
In the second line, I have attempted single quotes, double quotes, single quotes surrounded by double quotes, double quotes surrounded by single quotes. Nothing had helped.
How to I properly put this path into the project file?

What happens is everything before the "12.0" is lost and linker is not able to find the library.

I found a solution to this. I was reminded about the old DOS short name for directories, and by using those it fixed the problem.

You should use the Visual Studio macros for all the known paths. Changing these names to fixed paths or, as in your answer, to 8.3 type names, will most likely cause you problems in the future.

Actually I had already tried that as well, with the same result. Eventually the Visual Studio files will be moved to the server anyway, and at that point the macros would not be useful.

I would like to use DirectShow sample code filter – Bouncing Ball. Build in SDK 8.1.
I can build a library – Ball.lib , executable Ball.exe and my ancient compiler builds Ball.ax file.
All with exception of .ax file looks as DLL’s.
I seldom use DLL’s , but when I do I have a control of type of DLL.
Two questions – how do I use these files and what kind of DLL was build – how do I tell?
The doc with the sample code only instructs how to use Graph Edit, which for my purpose is good for nothing.
A sample application using any of the DirectShow samples would be helpful.
Any help is as always appreciated.

OK, for some unknown reason , AKA MS naming convention - these fiters builds are not using dll extension , but ax.
And apparently they are "self registering " too.

Hi all,
First all, I am a newbie for Windows Driver programming using C/C++.
Now what I need to step by step to learn and understanding it clearly.
I have try to read so much, big question is: what I am not clear are as belows:
- The driver must provide the standard names of function that can make Windows can map system API to this function.
- So it contact the hardware provider and Microsoft to create the final device?
(Because Microsoft have to map their API function to Driver function that is provided by em.

Driver development is too much different of what you are used to do in C/C++ development user mode, you don't have right the vocabulary to understand even if I reply.
Buy and read Windows Internals by Mark Russinovich 1[^] and 2[^]. (These books are one of the best investment I ever made)
It will not show you the code, but is the necessary bridge before starting to read book and resources about driver development.
In a very high lever yes, Windows API you are using in user land call functions in the driver, but the mapping is not as simple as a "override" in C++.

Environment: Windows 7, visual Studio, Team Foundation Server
I need help in getting started with Microsoft's TFS on their site. The account access URL takes this form:
https://your_name.visualstudio.com/
I created an account, can log in, but cannot figure out how to use it. Every tutorial I track down quickly progress to a statement that says: Do This, with no explanation of why or how.
When I log on, I cannot find the code that I think I uploaded. When I try to add code from a different directory it says that directory is not mapped. I cannot find anything that explains what they call a "mapping" and how to create it.
This TFS utility looks really cool, but I need help getting started. Is there anyone one willing to take this question? Links to tutorials will be most graciously accepted.

Hi to everyone. I want to write a programm that opens a cash drawer. How can i change the value of the 2nd bit of a register? The register's address is 4B8h and it's size is 8 bit. Can anyone help me with an example?

To flip a bit, you can use XOR (exclusive OR). If the target bit is off, this turns it on, and if the target bit is on, this turns it off.
Here is an example:
register = register ^ 0x02;

Do you mean that in the address 4B8h i will use XOR to change the 2nd bit to 1 that opens the cash drawer and then set it back to 0? Sounds too easy.

Read the current value of the register, flip the bit, write the new value back. You omitted to mention how or where you are accessing this register so it is difficult to be more precise.

Page 18 of the manual describes a technique by which you can manipulate the value of port 0x4B8 by using the debug.exe program while running under DOS or Win98.
Assuming the (cash) register has it's own OS and that I/O ports are accessible to user programs, you can simply use the inp/outp functions as found in <conio.h>.
Using the first example given in table 4.2.3, I've extended the table by 1 column to include the equivalent C code.

O 4B8 00 | Allow to closing | outp(0x4B8, 0x00);
Looking at the second table, one can see that a read of the port is required along with bit-masking to get at the desired bit.
1. Read the value.
2. Mask the unwanted bits.
3. Check the value remaining.

Unfortunately I can't use the inp function. I am running winXP on my machine. According to this : "If you are using a 32-bit compiler on either MS-Windows or *nix then forget those two functions because they are not implemented by any 32-bit/64-bit compiler. The operating system will not permit direct access to hardware or computer ports. You have to use normal operating system api functions. Those two functions were written for 16-bit MS-DOS which did permit programs direct access to hardware." I can't use theese functions.

I'd wondered if I was going to get a response something like that after seeing mention of XP in the manual you linked to.
In that case, you'll have to communicate with the drawer via a device-driver. They operate in ring0 under XP, and have direct access to the hardware - much like every program did under DOS.
There should be accompanying documentation of the steps required to interface to such a driver from a user-land program. (ring2 in XP).
If there is no driver, you'll need to write one yourself.  Which, I'm led to believe isn't necessarily as difficult as it may sound. You can download the WDK from microsoft (not the SDK) and go through some of the examples in it to get a start.

First of all thanks for your reply. I'll give it a try but i think that is too advanced for me. I've read the article about priviledge levels in XP so I understood what the problem was.Now I'm downloading the WDK.

You're welcome. Driver development isn't exactly an easy topic to broach, though you're bound to find some examples around the net of "Hello World" type examples. There may even be some here at CP, I haven't looked.
You wouldn't need terribly much functionality in the driver, so you may well find it considerably easier than it seems daunting. You could probably start with just two functions above the basic house-keeping stuff. One to read the value of the register(port) and another to write a value to it. You could then provide finer functionality in a user-mode DLL for specifics like opening the drawer etc - i.e use the ability to write a register from the DLL, setting the appropriate bit.
