I gave up on getting "deals" from network providers a few years ago when T-Mobile screwed me over. I will now buy the handset outright and get a SIM only deal from a network. And if I don't like it, I'll switch to another network.

(I actually now have a PAYG SIM which I can get unlimited data on for £15 per month). Over the course of the standard contract term I'm now much better off, although it does mean a larger upfront payment.

And the other advantage is that I can put foreign SIMs in when I'm travelling. Although the French SIM I have is now a bit pointless since the EU abolished roaming charges from within the EU it is actually cheaper paying my home rate in France, than paying the French rate in France. (Madness!)
