I will keep my Linux suggestion to myself then. 
I just thought I would suggest it as I recently removed Win7 from a laptop and installed Ubuntu and I have been quite impressed with it.
I thought my non-techy wife would hate it but she actually quite likes it too.

Ubuntu rocks, I've tested it a couple of times (mainly to recover data from dying laptops) and I've liked it. It's easy to use and intuitive, but now that I have everything ready to work at home changing from 7 to Linux is not a choice...
Who knows, I could try to install it in a virtual machine and cross fingers to make the TV-card work...

I will not embarrass myself by explaining why, just say that a lack of programming skill has been made evident by a small report I needed to have uploaded to a website each morning!

Why what is wrong with cmd files or powershell scripts.
If you are going to performing such hacks, and least move forward with the times a few years!

No, crude and nasty is booting from a DOS6 CD to edit the BAT file...and yes, I do have one in my folder

Too many folks these days think they "have to" use all the latest toys/tools from Buzz&Hype, without actually gaining anything beyond what was available and still gets the job done for the last 30+ years...

I couldn't agree more. I've had to write many a batch file in my career. Sometimes, the old simple solutions are the best.

I'm shameless .bat user. In fact I just edited one of my script this morning. I have repetitive mundane work and I write a batch file to do the work for me.
Some of the tasks I do with batch files
- Compare my local source code against source control
- Get/Refresh latest code from source code
- Build projects and solutions
- Compare a number of folders I regularly touch.
- Check who is logged on to which shared servers
The list goes on and on. It saves me a lot of time using .bat files instead of typing commands and/or clicking.

You have made me happy!
I am not a proper programmer like most here, I just do what I can to make my life easier.
Fortunately on those occasions when I have run into a brick wall (ie found the circumference of ignorance as far as coding goes) I utilise the gestaltic mind of the CP community to help solve my problems.
I also prefer to use the stuff I do know, such as opening a command shell and calling a BAT file because I am within my comfort zone with such venerable practises!

they're hideous, but they work!

Batch files? I still use them and though it sounds perverse, I rather like them.
If there is one thing more dangerous than getting between a bear and her cubs it's getting between my wife and her chocolate.

If you use the .cmd extension rather than .bat it makes it look as if you have moved forward a few years at least.

An old boss of mine - who was clueless when it came to IT even though he was "Director of IT" - had read how .BAT files were old technology, "a thing of the past", so instructed me to no longer make or support any .BAT files for any of our essential operations. I told him the change away from .BAT files would be a big job, and was about to point out what a waste of time it would be when he interrupted. He was adamant that he knew better than I what was needed and that I should just "get on with it as a top priority". He gave me three weeks to get it all done. This deadline was, of course, completely arbitrary as usual. I hadn't told him how long it would take and he hadn't asked.
I had some sudden inspiration and agreed to the three week deadline but warned him that I would need to concentrate on just this task and nothing else, I was not be disturbed and I might just make it. He readily agreed since I normally fought him on his arbitrary deadlines and went away happy - he issued instructions to the rest of the staff that I was working on a vital change and was not to be disturbed...
I spent a couple of hours going through all the .BAT files (about 100) and renaming them to .CMD files and testing them. Then I had three weeks of undisturbed peace and quiet to get caught up on a couple of other projects to which he had given equally unrealistic deadlines. I wished I had pushed for four or five weeks - he would probably have agreed to it!

1980's? You mean building basic programmes on Commodore Pets, women and flying? And more flying? Because it was a requirement to learn FLYING at Cranfield in those days?
Count me in. Maybe more big-haired women this time though.
