Last week , India launched its 1st mission to Mars. Last weekend I was talking with my nephew and he was totally going nuts about this launch and declared that he wants to be a "spaceman" and was giving many trivial facts about mars. He informed that whole school was watching this launch on TV live. So I went back to internet and started reading on this, quite impressive story but then something struck me odd. Some articles were little bias,
Quote: The extent to which countries were motivated by pragmatic interest or prestige varied from nation to nation. "For a country like Australia, the space aspirations are extremely pragmatically driven. On the other hand, a country like Malaysia is intent on putting astronauts in space -- that's very prestige-oriented." Really, Its not pragmatic for Malaysia.
Also other critics pointed that India still have poor people in streets. Thats true but why this should stop India from launching mission. Throughout the history, Men/Women/Nations have dreamt big inspite of hardships.
They can be mutually exclusive. Investing in science will help us in future.
Eg,
In 1999, India was hit by typhoon which resulted in 10,000 deaths.
--Change--
In 2013, India was hit by typhoon which resulted in 0 Deaths
During this --Change--, India launched 30+ commn/weather satellites, which resulted in properly predicting the storm path/intensity and helped in proper evacuation and saving of life.
If this launch triggers some hundred young mind to take applied science over "Software" , then this is mission is already as success
cheers,
Super

"You have poor people on the streets and are still taking international aid."
"So since you can afford space missions and nuclear weapons, you should not have any international aid."

I was hoping for you to respond with this issue. thats why I did not mention 300 million aid from UK in my post.
Please ask your PM (current and past) why they insist of giving grants to Indians. I dont remember Indians asking for it.
When Moon mission was launched, furore was raised for giving them aid. India said, they dont need it. But UK insisted of giving the aid. Its bad not to accept when others are hell bent in giving.
cheers,

It's given because most of it then gets spent with companies who are run by mates of UK ministers.

India has spent 45 million to get to Mars.
We want to spend 42 billion to get to Birmingham.

Well, quite.
My main objection to HS2, despite the second phase crossing near where I live (my car actually came to a rest next to the sign saying "HS2 crosses here" on Sunday) is that it is not imaginative or interesting enough.
If you must spunk billions away on a pointless project, at least make the finished product entertaining.

Nobody want to get "to Birmingham".
Many want to "get away from Birmingham" and preferably as fast as possible...and the same applies to the other cities HS2 will service.

Never discuss money with capitalists or tories -- they've spent far, far more time and energy on thinking up spurious, self-serving arguments than you have.
If you want to discuss people, peoples, nations, the future, aspirations, and/or things that will benefit mankind, take money off the agenda.
Here's one for you personally: How much time does your precious Doctor Who spend on working out how much money he can make?
There's not much point in having heroes if you decide to live a life that is completely antithetic to theirs.

Why give £300,000,000 to a country that can afford nuclear weapons, a space programme and warships at a time when our own people are dying from poverty?
Socialists are dangerous and idealistic and hate the idea of wealth being used to protect their own.
Communism prefers all to be levelled down rather than levelled up, for enter comfort and wealth, exit socialism.
I would prefer the £300,000,000 to be spent on policing, teaching, road maintenance, NHS and Border Controls.
