Agreed that the story shouldn't be smiled at but I don't think Ms Shoesmith should be vilified in the way she has.
The reality is, the case didn't cross her desk until Baby P had died, the social workers that were in charge of the case had already undergone disciplinary procedures (blame the fact they weren't sacked on the mindset of 'public servants' anyway) and Ed Balls wanted to make himself look good so announced that he was taking action to sort the situation.
The inspectors that went into the branch were under instructions to ensure that a result could be delivered by Balls and a number of them disagreed with the way that the NHS and police were absolved of blame while all the fault lay with Ms Shoesmith. She'll likely never work again so some political point scoring could take place and I think that alone deserves her some sort of recompense.

What if (xkcd)[^] is quite philosophical this week.
The privacy question about accessing data of dead people is interesting. I am doing a lot of things online, and I am quite sure Mrs. RaGE does not know about half of them (I am only talking about the one she may know about  ). Not because I am hiding anything, but just because of her lack of interest. This very account is a good example.
The other question is about Facebook going down in the future, "like any other web creation so far". While it has already been seen in the past (AOL or eBay alike sites or search engines before Google), I very much doubt that sites such as Google or Facebook would die at some point of time. This would mean there would either be no user anymore because the need they fulfill would not exist anymore, or that a form of concurrence would arise, which both seems quite unlikely ( But I guess that is what people said about AOL, or Blackberries for real world examples, in the past, and this must precisely be the point of Randall).

Why?
Both rely on advertising to make profits.
If people stop using them (in Google's case because someone else starts a better search engine, or <joke> Bing gets better than Google</joke>; in Facebook's case because something else becomes more fashionable) then advertisers stop paying them, so they lose money and eventually close.
The only instant messaging I do involves my middle finger.

There is more spying on allies than there is on enemies; for one thing it is cheaper. Everybody spies on everybody else, the point of secrets is not that others don't know, but that they don't know yet.
As a simple exercise, let us assume that Messrs Camaron and Obama are having a meeting to discuss a new US/UK Widget Agreement. These are allies, yet they need to know what the other is thinking so that they can try to have the hand come negotiations. Most spying starts with asides picked up at receptions; yet ALL diplomats say things they shouldn't. The good ones know they are being listened to and deliberately mislead. The brilliant ones make Sir Humphrey look open.
