I got back from S'Efrica yesterday morning. Springtime temps where we were staying got to 32 deg C which ain't 'arf good seeing they just clawed their way out of winter. The food, as always, is excellent as was the wine. Mrs. Wife is staying for a third week so I have caught up on some "crafty" shopping this morning and ordered a new keyboard/mouse and mono laser printer. As they say, while the cat's away, the mice implement their own playful agenda. Big Grin | :-D

Mrs. W's niece studied physio/OT in Joburg and completed a year's community service at a children's orphanage in Kawazulu-Natal a few months ago. She phoned a friend of hers who's still there and asked if we could go there and see the place. We drove along dusty roads where there was mile-after-mile of veldt. When we arrived, niece's friend asked the orphans to sing for us. It completely moved me to shed a few tears. Bloody heck, it was beautiful to hear those kids sing. We later asked if we could give money to the orphanage. Giving was the right thing to want to do, but sometimes you give into things that don't always "get" to where it's needed but both she and Mrs. W's niece told us it will. We looked around the place and how clean and tidy it was kept and a mobile clinic operating from a converted camper-van calls twice a day and the local farmers give the young'uns fresh veg and meat to keep them healthy.

One little lad who could only speak Zulu told the five of us about particular insects and birds he likes to watch. Perhaps he'd been taught to say it but we laughed aloud when the principal who translated for us told he said "he doesn't want school to get in the way of his education!" Big Grin | :-D

When we got back to Joburg my wife and her other sister (who came over from Adelaide) decided we'd give the orphanage £2000 each...

...a little while back I mentioned about an inheritance I was unexpectedly given by the hubby of one of my wife's friends (she nursed them both through cancer, though Jim sadly died at the hospice where she works), anyway, the three sets of golf clubs he left to me have yielded a good return. I gave one set to the local club to teach newbies; the second set was given to someone to sell and he got £450; the third set was held in storage at the posh golf club, Wentworth, where he'd been a member for over 30 years. His wife contacted someone there and they arranged to sell the third set of clubs which were a couple of years old but only every used once. They were apparently really expensive but I don't know yet how much somebody else at the club bought them for. No matter what the total, everything we make from them will go to that orphanage. I don't know if that's what Jim had in mind but I really couldn't think of a better place to give the money to.

Yes, the food, the wine, the beer, the braais, meeting old mates, the climate, the exchange rate, spending no more than £200 in two weeks, were all things to make it a lovely vacation.

But right now, and I hope it stays with me, a dusty road leading to an orphanage in the middle of nowhere, run by dedicated staff and medical teams for the benefit of lovely young'uns singing beautiful songs and whose faces can still laugh at things I'd not notice. A short three hour visit to that place eclipsed everything else by a mile and more. Smile | :)
If there is one thing more dangerous than getting between a bear and her cubs it's getting between my wife and her chocolate.
