I can't get sms at a reasonable price here, and it's all but impossible to type on those useless keypads. I have, however, used my ham radio when I've fallen off my barstool to connect to a repeater with a phone patch and call the bartender to ask her to deliver the next round to my patch of carpet.

What would you consider a reasonable price??? ~8cent is the usual here in Ireland on off peak times and ~12 on peak times.
Writing txt's is easy... just use T9 Predictive input

I'd consider $.01 a reasonable price, if the service was even available. I've never heard of T9 predictive input, and I'm sure that Sprint hasn't either. I can't see any value in a service that sends cryptic messages for an extra charge when I already have 3000 minutes of talk time I've never used for a fixed price that I'm going to pay whether I use it or not.
I can get text messaging with Sprint, but there's an extra monthly fee on top of what I already pay, and a per message charge on top of that. SMS just hasn't caught on in the US, though I know it's common in Europe. Verizon is starting to advertize the service here, but I don't see anyone using it yet other than children who should be paying attention to their teachers in class instead of passing notes.

I was paying a total of $85/mo for my cell phone and my girlfriend's, for 2000 anytime/anywhere minutes, including unlimited Sprint-to-Sprint minutes. I was also paying $35/mo for local phone service, which is supposed to be a base rate of $19/mo, but even the neighbor isn't local (well, just about) the way the phone company splits things up, so there were all these extra "out of zone" charges.
Seemed ridiculous. Karen and I don't talk 2000 minutes a month (yes Paige*, that means only 64 minutes a day!), long distance or not. Plus, one phone is a San Diego number, and the other phone is a Rhode Island number, so my client's and my ex-wife (who live in San Diego) can call me as a local call. Try doing that with your phone company. (Our son lives with me, should you be wondering why I make it convenient for my ex to call me).

You hare right, but if you have customers (hospital) working also during night and weekend with cellular phone they can reach evverytime.
Until wireless internet has so many limits (in space) they'll continue to make a call...
P.S. I've asked (in Italy to Vodafone) to use GPRS to receive eMail and they ask me 20cents per KiloByte... Imagine if I redirect my eMail to portable device during weekend and someone sendme (as usaully) some Mb of PDFs..

Perhaps it depends, William, the people you are referring to. The Technical team normally prefers Instant Messaging for discussions, because they can also share some live codesnippets or examples how exactly things are working etc. But for business development team, perhaps they would prefer lifting a phone and talking. Is'nt it?

I think you're right. Where I work, only the developers IM; although, it's mostly the younger guys in the office that tend to use it and one of the more 'in-tune' older fellas.
The sales staff, on the other hand, is quite perplexed by it all.
We use Trillian because it shares between AIM, MSN, ICQ, IRC and a few others and we can all intercommunicate regardless of choice of provider. Of course, one does have to signup using at least one of the providers as Trillian itself does not provide it's own proprietary consumer interface. Quality product, though.
