I'm ranting and need a perspective, I feel like I've made/committed a huge move and its been very painful. I would like some insight on how small dev shops, plan and manage thier tools (the big ones have lots of money, so this is from a small owner. Also, how have you gotten the frameworks to work, support to live-up to the products issues.
As a small business owner, to speed up the development process, I purchased a 3rd party component/control set. Currently, I have a friend who helps develop the code. This decision was done with the extent possible due-diligence prior to purchase (for e.g. after their sales group mentioned the features were supported, and the demo's on-line seemed to show the case).
Now it turns out, these very same demo features listed on the website, simply don't seem to perform or function in the practical application world. I fell for their free succinctly books, free metro studio icons, bummer!
Upon use, we've found:
They're well short of the functionality
i.e. without extensive manipulation of the framework, both in the the server-side, and the JavaScript side.
Some the components are not fully authored with component design.
The components don't play well together.
The samples don't build.
IMHO, I might add defeats, the whole point of leveraging 3rd party components.
Everytime, we want support, they try to pitch premium upgrades, the sales team is very good/aggressive, but the product just doesn't live up.

Understand your rant. Used a charting component (name hidden) for years without problems.. Then, last year: license expired, please renew.. cost over 1000 dollars. Since then, refactored code to use MS chart.. Works perfectly..

I'm dreading this, even before the license expired.
The support team sent me samples to show it would work, but it would never build, and now, they want me to purchase premium for something that should work out of the box.
Feels like I'm testing their products in Production, and reporting back to them. They need to pay me
I really really wish Microsoft would release MVC controls for tree's, org chart, client side OLAP, drag and drop widgetry, some of the more serious stuff. So, that the developers dont have to be at the mercy of 3rd party controls.

I use two sets of control. Syncfusion and Mindscape. I'm very happy with them.
|

I use syncfusion as well. Only problem I had was that they changed the namespaces after upgrades.. Made me refactor an over 50 forms/user controls project..

Haven't used Mindscape, maybe I'll try it.
Telerik, was better polished, but felt like the bloat was much.
+Themerolling, and tooling like just decompile is great.
+Drag Drop rocks.
-Very Expensive
-Extending was a little complex, with partial classes, its easier now.
Migrated from Telerik to using Syncfusion.
Pros:
+Price to feature set is great, if not best
+On occasions, some of the support members, give you samples, gets you off the ground quicker, if they do this.
Cons:
-Needs more baking, any deep applications quickly surface some of the incomplete design.
-I find myself, going back and forth with customer service over emails a whole lot.
-They're also pushing premium support.
-Feels like I'm part of their test team.

One little thought: if MS does everything for us, would developers still be usefull?

Thankfully there are some of us that think rum and Bundy in particular is not a valid alcohol transport method! I mean they stick coke in the dammed stuff to make it drinkable or possibly it is a vain attempt to improve coke!

When a distiller spends all that effort to purify and lift the alcohol content it seems bizarre that someone would just add more sugar and water in the form of a carbonated beverage.
Any spirit worth its keep should be poured over ice and be sipped or slammed. I don't mind a smidgeon of water being added, but any more than that is throwing water on the fire.
possibly it is a vain attempt to improve coke! It does improve Coke without doubt.
they stick coke in the dammed stuff to make it drinkable This is a sinful, foolish and a trite bogan thing to do. I quote your sig now Never underestimate the power of human stupidity
Rum is good. Pour it on ice with maybe a splash of water and enjoy it.
If you want to adulterate it, especially in the winter, pour half rum and half cloves cordial into a glass with no ice. Its a fire inside liquor.
I don't drink rum very often, maybe have a bottle once every two years.
Perhaps I am not defending rum so much as defending MM.
We started off down here with a rum economy and the rum corps.
To tell you the truth, I just can't handle it.
After the 3rd glass I start speaking Pirate.

I have to admit, I can't remember when I last actually looked at the MSDN home page. I had heard they were updating it, but never actually looked at it. Apparently, people are hating it[^]. Do some people actually care what's on that page?

Only time I go there is to look up framework specific documentation... and even then I usually find it through google so I never see the front page.

Exactly! The home page could just be a big search box for all I care.

Looks like it's had the Metro effect applied to it. Eg, half arsed design.

I don't hate it.. As it can tell me what I want.. On another note, I usually Google to find the specific page, CP helps too, most Q&A links are MSDN.

Don't actually think I've ever been there.
Google, with "MDSN" in the terms, seems to get the job done.
That screenshot looks like it's a bit Win8/Fisher Price though.
