Mine come from the design stage. Whenever I build a computer I spec it out and then order the parts. It is still a tad bit more expensive than a shelf bought PC but I don't have to mess with crapware or brand names.

I imagine this to be the case for most people here on CP.

It's a yes/no question that doesn't allow a yes or no answer? I said "yes".
I build my own and upgrade periodically as well. How else am I to get an otherwise up-to-date system with a 5.25" floppy drive?

How about googling "usb 5.25" floppy drive"?

No reason to; I have a regular 5.25" and hardware that supports it, done.

For me makes no sense to have a desktop PC so I need a powerful machine always with me.
Now with the ultra notebooks I can have a powerful & light machine.
So, for a lot of years now, I only buy memory to upgrade to the maximum allowed.
SSD is also a good upgrade but my laptop already came with one.
Graphics Card
I don't play games on the PC, I use the consoles for that, so no need for xpto power graphics card.
CPU
Usually who upgrades the CPU should upgrade the memory, then the storage device and then, if nothing else worked as expected and the CPU is above 80% most of the time... ok, go ahead...
Main Board
Yeah... to allow to have more memory!!!
Cooling
Eh... never was a big fan of overclockings. It's like tuning a car, if the tuning costs more than the car itself then something is wrong! :p
Racing Stripes
Yeah! To impress the chicks!! :p
Cheers!

Computers are too cheap to bother upgrading today. It probably helps that I don't game. So I just buy what I want until it doesn't work for me anymore. The advantage to being behind the times so far is that my new $275 laptop (last year) is about the fastest machine I have ever owned and it didn't break the bank. In a few more years, a similar priced new machine will be worlds faster and my kids will have to deal with my cheap ways.

Worse than that, I used to have a hand-crafted PC at home, and all I ever used it for was to mail and surf. Then my daughter got a new laptop and gave me the old one, which has windows 7 and all kinds of stuff and it's all I need, and I can pick it up and use it all over the place.
Here at work, it's a different story. In the lab I have 3 machines and 5 screens (5 different screens, have to concentrate just to turn them all on) and no end of devices. If I need something bigger I say so and I get one. These machines zip like lightning. Apart from the targets, of course, which move like treacle. Up here in the office I have a nice zippy PC, and for heavy stuff I use the server, which compiles so fast you think it didn't do anything and start it again.

So I upgrade/replace/cuss/bend/spindle and mutilate my own systems and if it don't work I'm also customer service. I hate dealing with customer service!

I have an old Compaq Presario which I bought five years ago for $400. A month or two ago, I spent $400 on a new system board, fans, power supply and memory for it: it's now effectively a different machine. The drives aren't original, either -- so now it still looks like an old piece of sh*t, but actually it's very, very fast -- sort of like my car...

The only parts in my current PC that haven't been upgraded (yet) are the CPU and motherboard (the original hard drive is still there as well, but it's been supplemented with a second drive, and soon a third in the form of a solid state cache drive). I've upgraded the RAM twice (and added cooling fans for it), added a video card (initially used integrated graphics), swapped the stock CPU fan for a liquid cooling system, upgraded the power supply, and even put it in a new case (and hopefully soon a third case, the current one is too small to make more upgrades, and I had to sacrifice my CD drive for the cooling system). I'll probably replace the CPU for the heck of it too eventually, there are still better CPUs available for the socket I have.
So I suppose you could say I "customise or upgrade" my computer. Just a little.

With my current system, the only thing that hasn't been upgraded in some way or form is the cabinet.
Graphic cards are in the no3 iteration. If I can recall correct, I originally build this system in 2000. I dread the day when I have to put down 10-15k dkr for my new system, yes I budgetted it. My car cost me 14k dkr.

That's another thing I'd like to upgrade (after I get a bigger case), get two cards instead of the one I have now (it's a great card, runs everything at max settings on 1080p, it just can't run games well at 2560x1440, but apparently even most new high end ones can't on their own).
But I understand your pain, my computer has more money in it than my last car was worth.

But you probably don't have to worry too much about cooling these days - my brother lives in Silkeborg and I understand it is a bit chilly at the moment.

I draw the line at mobo/cpu swaps; ram/disks/gfx cards are just upgrades. The former two because they're just supporting components; the latter because as a gamer, it's the one part where an upgrade actually does make a huge performance difference. I'm currently on my 3rd/4th GPU for my LGA1366 based desktop (GTX 260, GTX 260x2, 5870, GTX 560) and working to convince myself that buying a 670 now when the rumor mill has AMD and nVidia's next gen cards starting to show up in the next 3 to 6 months isn't a good idea.
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?
