If you are using SQL Server, maybe you could have a "JOB" configured and your page would simply pass arguments to the job and tell it to start. The SQL job will execute asynchronously and your user is free to do whatever they want.

You could get fancy and have another page which would show the status of the job to the user. The job itself you email the user when it is compltete.
