Come to think of it, my last birthday I just asked for people to give me ideas for domain names. They didn't even need to buy them; I just wanted the ideas.
Though, for a poor college student, a domain and a year of hosting probably wouldn't be a bad gift.

Apart from work
it is bed for some people,
food for some,girl/ boy friend for some,
beer for some,..... and for me it is gaming stuff.

I lucky enough to be able to buy my own toys so I don't expect anyone to give them to me.
Anyway, it's kind of hard to explain what I like in the geek world so usually I get clothing and sports gear most of the time.

Buying tech for a developer is stupid - it will almost guaranteed be the wrong thing. We buy our own tech, so we get the exact right stuff. Tech is a bad gift choice for a techie person... tech gift cards on the other hand

Exactly... and especially silly for techies who have their own business (hence any tech stuff bought is a tax deduction)...

I finally convinced my family not to try and buy me tech stuff. If I want it, I probably already have it, or it's too expensive to get as a gift. Once the "snob" comments dissipated, we were all happier.

I sometimes work on mechanical things -- more of a necessity than a hobby, given that I mow my lawn with a '46 Ford 2N tractor. I'm still trying to convince my wife not to give me tools as gifts. I know what I need, she doesn't.

I like to buy others backup supplies (USB drives, DVD+RWs) as a gift to myself... it makes my life easier down the road.

I agree, that I would not trust my mom to get the correct RAM sticks or parts for my liquid cooling system, but she could certainly pick out an iPad.

Healthy mind and clear inspiration = Great work.
Developers in particular underestimate just how much of a burden their bodies and minds are adding to the work load. It's not something that's discussed often enough and the few chances we get are struck down as stereotypes.
All stereotypes begin with a grain of truth. Time to own up to it and do something about it.

I won't lie... I'm a big fan of caffeine too and in small doses is all fine and good.
But the more you stop those burdens with caffeine, the bigger the burdens tomorrow... and more of the caffeine you will need.
It's sort of a "Runaway Greenhouse Effect" of the body.

The obvious missing choice: a cash-card of some sort; preferably not specific to any store. Can't go wrong with choosing the gift if they choose it themselves.
