Typically I prefer to open an AVD from the AVD manager first and then run my app once it has started. Even better test on a real device, they are faster.

I am a C# ASP.NET developer. I am trying to develop for Windows Mobile. I have the following questions: Could someone suggest some ideas? I have been searching forums also.

1. O/S- Compact Edition/Windows 7-Comparisons
2. VS 2010 development in C# - Will it run both in Compact&Windows 7 O/S.
3. Silverlight/WPF Support - We need rich UI
4. Free Database – upto 1 GB storage – SQL Lite/SQL Express/SQL Compact Edition(Not so sure whether it is free)
5. Zigbee commuication
6. GPRS communication to connect to windows based systems through TCP/FTP
7. Download application from the server automatically and upgrade
8. Simulators

I think this answers a couple of your questions:

3. Windows Phone 7 uses a cut-down version of Silverlight (with a extra few phone-specific controls).
6. You can use the same standard TCP/IP classes as on Windows (with a few restrictions).
7. Software deployment to a phone works through the Marketplace. This provides notifications about possible updates, but doesn't seem to allow auto-update.
8. The dev software comes with a simulator, but it doesn't beat testing the software on a real device.

You should be able to get more info from the Microsoft website.

Hi there:

last couple of month I just thought, that I should know iOS, android / smart device apps development.... I request you guys are expert on that and help me step by steps, for example.

Steps(i) Create the development environment..
* ?? IDE.
* ?? simulator.
* ?? SDK..
* Write my first program etc.

Just I am a beginner...

Just pick one platform and learn that first. They are all totally different.
Not sure what you mean by beginner. Beginner software developer or beginner mobile device developer?

If you know Java, go Android
If you know Objective C, go iOS.
If you know .NET, go Windows Mobile.

If you don't know any of the languages, learn the basics first. Most mobile device documentation assume you have an understanding of the language.

Pick one, learn it and then move to another platform. All the developer centres have good programming guides.

Download eclipse. http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/

to get android for eclipse you will need to get the android sdk starter package from here
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html

unpack the sdk on your machine. by default it is :

android-sdk-<machine-platform>.

Make sure you keep note of the location, you'll have to point to it later.

It's a good idea, especially for debugging, to add this to your system path.

on linux : export PATH=${PATH}:<your_sdk_dir>/tools

on windows: On Windows, right-click on My Computer, and select Properties. Under the Advanced tab, hit the Environment Variables button, and in the dialog that comes up, double-click on Path (under System Variables). Add the full path to the tools/ directory to the path.

The next step is to get the android development tools (adt) for eclipse. Open eclipse
and select the help->install new software. When the box pops up select "Available Software"

The available software sites box will pop up. You want to select Install/Update from
the menu on the left, and then click add. give it some name and put this url in:

https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse/

If this has an error, you can change the system settings to force use of https, or you can
change the site url to :
http://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse/

Close necessary windows to get back to the Available Software dialogue. There is a drop
down menu at the top of this box. You should be able to select your named site and it
will populate the download window. Select all and continue the update, then restart eclipse

Now we need to point eclipse to the SDK directory and set up the preferences.

Window-> Preferences
Select android from the left window. In the upper box on the right side, select browse
and navigate to your sdk directory. Click apply

Setting up the SDK can be done from the directory , or the eclipse ide.

In eclipse you can select window->android sdk manager.

In your android sdk directory, SDK Readme.txt will explain how to set up the
sdk, launch the sdk and avd manager tools, etc. You can navigate to the sdk/tools directory
and just type android.

There are examples in your sdk directory, plenty on the web, etc. HOpe that helps.

If you want to learn Android here are a few links:

Eclipse is the most common IDE[] but I would recommend getting started with the Motodev Studio IDE[^]. Either way, download the IDE and get started because it can take a long time to download all the SDK's.

You install the SDK's using the Android SDK Manager. If you install Motodev IDE you can find the manager in the menu bar under the Windows menu.

You don't need an actual device to start learning. You can use simulators called AVD's, Android Virtual Devices. Google recently introduced Fragments, Action bars and other stuff that has made things a bit more complex so keep it simple to start with.

It's a challenging but rewarding space so have fun!

Well, you're going to have to write your own... there's probably some sort of library if you look hard enough. Video conferencing can employ a lot of different configurations (point-to-point, server in the middle) so you're just going to find a library that you can use and extract what you need. Or if you're a proficient programmer, just do it yourself, Android uses Java though, they do have emulators so you can test your code on your PC.

Well, I think I got myself into trouble here. The boss was not happy at all that I said I couldn't do something. So I thought I'd post here again for some "urgentz gimme linkz" help (haha?)

We have a generic knockoff tablet from china. It's Android B1 that is not supported by clockwork recovery software. I can install an image manually, but to do that I need to know the device. This device doesn't even have a name...so I don't even know what to google. Anyone have any help?

I tried explaining this to the boss. I also explained that he is not asking me to write software (this was when he was explaining how programmers don't give up, and he's never had a programmer say they couldn't do anything). Also, because I'm a linux guy does not make me an android guy. (And android apps don't still don't make this "my cup of tea").

I'm not sure what to do. Any help [other than telling me to get a new job Big Grin | :-D

. You could wrap a website for each platform to reduce dev time. Beware that if that site has a link to an opportunity to buy product that Apple doesn't make their 30%+, the app may be rejected for breaching Apple guidelines.

I can see into the future, tools like CodeSmith will be used to generate boiler-plate code. But even then there are issues. The main one is the look and feel of the different platforms. Other things like licensing, advertising etc will mean you're not going to find a push button solution.
