I am starting to look at mobile development myself having worked on some C# projects in the past four years.

I have chosen Android as the platform to learn.
I have never written Java before but looking at it yesterday it has enough similarities with C#(C# is the progeny of Java) for it to be fairly straightforward with regards to the basics.

So if you want to develop in Android here is the order of installation, it being fresh in my history, I have provided you with the URLs.

Download and install the Android SDK clickety[^]

Download and install the Java JDK clickety[^]

Download and install the Eclipse IDE UK mirror clickety[^] - you may need to navigate up a level or two to find a mirror site closer to you...

Start with the Android Hello World tutorial and take it from there clickety[^]

Depending on how you are doing after all of this here is a really helpful SQLite tutorial clickety.[^]

I am new to Windows Phone. We have some legacy WinForm applications for Windows CE 4.0. Does Windows Phone 7.x support WinForm development?

It appears to me that most tutorials are using WPF ot Silverlight, which makes me think that WinForm does not exist on Windows Phone any more. Is it still possible to port legacy WinForm apps to Windows Phone?

The answer to your question is no, WP7 is a totally different platform. It's not windows.

I have some apps writen for legacy Windows CE 4.0. More specifically, the apps were built using C# on Visual Studio 2003 (basically .NET 1.x). Is it possible to port them on to Nokia Windows Phone, say 7.0 or 7.5? If yes, how easy or how difficult is the porting? Thanks!

You'll need to create a WP7 project. I think you'll be OK on the CE side of things. How much of it you can port will just depend on the code base and the assemblies that makeup the solution. Regardless your going to have to rewrite the presentation layer.

Well, MS seems to be going out of their way to make life as difficult as possible for mobile developers. I've been going through years of posts - people such as I trying to get VS 2008 Pro to work.

So, I have a large project in EVC++ SP4. EVC++ works fine on XP, but I'm on a W7 64 bit machine, so it only works in the Xp Virtual Machine. So, I want to go to VS 2008 Pro completely and skip the extra set of machine processing.

For the life of me, I cannot get VS to see the 3rd party device. The SDK installs, but nothing ever shows up in the device target list. I could list 100s of worthless discussions on msdn complaining about variations of the same thing. I've drawn three conclusions:

1) don't EVER install beta anything without being able to wipe your installation;
2) the standard discussion board response is - post elsewhere;
3) most questioners go away sad, realizing that they've been told to continue to remove and install until it works.

anyone have any ideas or work arounds?

I *finally* found a reference to a solution. Turns out that MS changed something that breaks sdk installations when they went to 2008. The solution is to CAREFULLY install the sdk:

Please reply with any ASM code, hard wiring, interfacing capacitor that might be needed to put a ALPHA-TRX-433S module operating in both DATA and FIFO mode. Also, is it possible to operate with 5V / TTL voltage levels (datasheet advices: 2.2V – 3.8V power supply)

I'm trying to create a small project in my laptop. Could someone please tell me once this application is up and running is there a possibility to access this application via bluetooth on to my mobile phone.

Unless the application is a published web application the answer is no. And then no bluetooth required, just an internet connection.

Typically applications need to target a particular device platform(iPhone, Android, WP7). So unless your project targets one of those platforms it wont work. It's a lot like saying can I run my windows app on Apple or Linux.

Hey all,

I am trying to figure out something simple...maybe..

A very simple 2 xaml page app for windows phone.

Page1 has a button with default text.."button"..no biggie

OnHold event navigates to second page: this I have...that was easy.

Page 2 has a Listbox, with say 3 items..item1, item2 and item3.

Here's what I want to do.

I select an item, 1 or 2 or 3, and the items name is displayed in the button...updated text...so now the button says item1 , for example.

Also...the item selected, selects an object that resides ina folder in the solution.. Lets say I call this folder Resources..and in the folder are text files or png's or whatever..

How would I update the text in the button, that shows the selected item from a different page?

You could pass parameters between pages just like in HTML pages so as to update the button content. An example is mentioned here:

use ATI for manufacturer info.
use AT&V(ATI3) for complete modem settings.
