Why is "Show member profile popups?" below the signature box instead of above with the rest of the check boxes?
PS I still say that adding a border visible without hovering over would make it much more obvious that the signature text was editable.

I got bored while studying my OU course on AI and decided to go spam hunting on CP instead.......

I'm guessing he used the 'Security Guard on the Front Door technique'. Go to Who's Who and select it so that it displays members by there ID in descending order(New members first), this way you can catch them as they come in.

The accounts are spamming via the user biogs, not by posting messages, there are still a few of the first batch still active, and all the second batch.
Going by the content of the biogs, some of these are by the same creators as the first batch.
So, still some clean up to do

This is a common way to spam. I'm running the inSpamerator script now to weed out a bunch. A few hundred already removed.
