It's a bitch getting old; things that happenned yesterday are transient memories, and those that happenned decades ago become crystal clear. Except for the names...

I can picture the faces of friends and coworkers I knew 20 - 30 years ago as clear as if they were standing in front of me now, but can't for the life of me remember their full names, or where I met them. Just last weekend, while shopping at Home Depot in Kingman, AZ, I was assisted by a man who looked so familiar and whose voice and mannerisms were so well known to me that I knew in advance every line he spoke. I knew him long ago, knew him well, but I could not recall where we spent time together until a day later when it finally dawned on me. We were friends in my past life, in Crestline, PRC, and his wife and I used to work the Sunday LA Times crossword together in the bar where she worked. That was 23 years ago, and I haven't seen either since, but I should have remembered that instantly! D'Oh! |

I think Robert Heinlein got this one right in his Lazarus Long tales. According to Lazarus, long term memory becomes a problem of long life, because life's experiences grow linearly, but the cross-connections between the memories grow geometrically. One new experience can easily grow to 1,000 or more associative cross references, quickly absorbing all available space for storage. Now that normal people live much longer than they were designed to last, I expect to see this becoming a much larger social issue.
Will Rogers never met me.
