I have a dataGrid. Inside that gird i have text box. And there is textbox for search in outside the grid. once i enter searching criteria and press search button(outside the grid) it will search and focus to the first text box which inside the grid. it will work fine. but i hit enter key it will search but it does not focus to the datagrid first text box. please help me to focus the cursor to the first text box of datagrid when press enter
Note : All the controls are inside one updatepanel.

It is mostly about experience. Design patterns get their name from their repetitive nature. When you have seen one type of problem often enough you can tell when a similar solution would apply. Patterns can be at very different levels of the software architecture though. A pattern like the Party pattern is pretty high level and implies data models. A pattern like Observer can be much lower level and might only apply to an event on a single control like a button click or it could be very high level and be applied to a message queue in an enterprise service bus.
Be careful about patterns. They can be a lot like fads. When Microsoft released the MVC framework tons of people decided that they had to shove all their projects into that pattern. But if you only ever have one view and that view has to re-implement a lot of the business rules that would also go in the model (client side validators in the view and further validation in the domain objects), you aren't buying yourself much.

Obiously, its is based on the requirement. At the time of design, one should decide, what pattern best suits for the requirement. At some point, tailoring of an existing pattern ,might be required also.

Find a design patterns book/website, implement them, and understand why and when they are used. Then decide if any are applicable to your project given your requirements. Each design pattern is a solution to a problem, not a solution looking for a problem.
The original Gang of Four (GoF) patterns each had a specific use in mind. The idea behind the book was that if you had a problem there is probably some commonly used solution which can be applied without needing to re-invent the wheel. A second advantage is that the patterns were given names which developers can use as a kind of shorthand e.g. "I'll us a singleton class" as opposed to "I'll need to write a class to make sure that only one instance of it exists".
The problem is design patterns have become the latest thing, so everyone wants to say they use design patterns. Additionally there has been a design pattern explosion too (negating the "shorthand" effect). That's not to say there is anything wrong with the original research, just the way it has been taken up by the dev community.

Start off by working out what you actually want your project to do, and how you want it to work. Once you know that, you need to break the application down into smaller areas and start thinking about how to compartmentalize the different aspects of the app. Don't get hung up on designing for patterns; let it come naturally.

Hi all,
in my datatable i have 2 columns 1.email 2. fax(retrieving from database)
that datatable i am storing in arrylist.
i am doing like this:
for (int i = 0; i < dt.Columns.Count; i++)

a1.Add(dt.Rows[0][i].ToString());
}
wht i have to do is store arrylist inside string.
after storing the values in string , i have to identify the email with "@" symbol if value contains @ symbol then i have to bind that values to array2
if anybody knows please let me know.

I have some suggestion for you
1. Why are you using ArrayList you can use Generic List instead.
2. You can use Regular Express to validate email.
3. you can fire Linq query to filter out your list
I know this is not answer but you should have to improve your programming using upgrade techniques

Make sure you have rows. Do like:

Hi,
I have installed VS 2008 and SQL Server 2008 Enterprise edition. I basically want to add my database to my website. in the App_Data folder right click and find my database(.mdf). the problem is after hitting enter I got this error.(Access Denied)
does any one has any solution,pleas.

SQL Server Enterprise? You're running a server OS on your development machine?
All you need is SQLExpress. If you look at the machine.config you will see the default connection string is to a SQLExpress instance.

Assuming that you have to attach the mdf as a static file in your project due to licensing on the SQL Server or for some other reason can't deploy the MSSQL server to your deployment environment, you should perhaps look into using SQLLite and not MSSQL. Clickey

i have done the following steps:
I installed VS2008 and MSSQL2008;
I design database and its table in SQLServer2008.
I don't installed SQLExpress.
now, I am developing an MVC Web Application;
the problem is when right click in App_Data folder and choose existing item to add the created database in SQLServer2008, get this error: Access Denied.
Could you please tell me what is the problem? is there any solution to remove fix this error without installing SQLExpress?

SQl Express is not an answer. Your problem is that you cannot connect a db the way your are trying to. You have to create objects that connect with the SQL Server. You are getting Access Denied because SQL Server owns and controls the file.

Hi All,
I have XML string as below. I am trying to deserialize this xml string in to a Request Object or NewHire Object. I have designed the Request class as it holds
the instance of NewHire class as a public property. I did in two ways
1. First time when I tried for the Request type it was giving exception like error in identifying property NewHire.
2. Then I deleted the Request element from the xml and kept from NewHire to /NewHire part only and then tried to deserialize the object for the NewHire type.
Then its not giving the exception but all the values in the NewHire instance it is giving null. Its not reading the values.

I want to create (or borrow if one exists) a "news ticker" for our website that aggregates RSS feeds from vendors and news outlets into a section of our webpage. I want to maintain the functionality of being able to click through to the stories as you would when using an RSS reader. Is there something out there that already exists and I'm just not looking for the right thing? I know I've seen this on other websites and was just wondering if this is something that every website has developed on their own? Any help is much appreciated, thanks!

When I don't pass certain value in textbox. It gives me above exception.

I want to ignore NULL values. How to tackle this problem.
I know it should have been easy. But anyhow, I stuck .

If the value in txtDOB.Text is a null or whitespace character, you need to set Value to DBNull.Value.

So to my best understanding, I can replace
old phrase
cmd.Parameters.Add("DOB", SqlDbType.SmallDateTime).Value = txtDOB.Text;
with this one
cmd.Parameters.Add("DOB", SqlDbType.SmallDateTime).Value = (string.IsNullOrEmpty( txtDOB.Text)) ? DBNull.Value.ToString() : txtDOB.Text;
Is there any way shorter to do this.

I normally use a utility method like this:
