I think it is reputation based, if you have the sufficient levels you can edit and delete, I can also edit and delete (have been able to for a while).

I can edit other peoples comments, write something under their identity, without leaving a trace? I hope this is a bug and not a feature.

I just edited one of your comments, the one about double posting, and added some dots to the end. And on the screen, it shows no evidence i have been there.
I think you get a notification via email to say someone modified your comment? not sure though....

Nope, no email notification, no special maker in my comments list (user profile page)... it's a perfect crime.

It was a feature, because we assumed that members of a certain rep level would not play silly buggers with others' comments and only edit / moderate those that required attention.
I guess we were wrong. I'll remove the access and go back to doing it manually. What a waste.

I think it would be fine to leave it, but add who last modified the comment at the end e.g.
Some comment.............by Frank (Last modified by: Bob)
and if the originator has notification active, send them an email saying their comment was modified. (same as if you modify someones question in the QAs)

Leave it in - being able to tidy up/format comments is useful. We should all remember "With great power comes great responsibility."

That would only work if such members were a really small minority - say 10 people, and you know each of these people well enough (how they behave in forums etc.). When the number of people with such editing rights gets bigger (say over 50) then it's safe to assume that there will be at least two or three of them who will act like retards. So in my opinion, it's a dangerous feature that you should either disable or restrict to a few hand picked members. [Or make it non-anonymous. So people can see that member-X edited comment-Y at a certain date-time]

I have used comment feature a lot but have rarely (or I guess never!) edited someone else comment. I think we should keep it, just in case if needed.
As you thought of earlier, I too havn't noticed anyone playing around with someone else comments.

Seriously, though, with a group as large as ours, we need some system to regulate the rebels.
OH! Just thought of a feature. You should totally have a "Prison" link prominently displayed in the main menu. Anybody who keeps breaking the rules gets put into prison. They get added to the list of prisoners, where their username and crime are displayed for all to see, and they are unable to participate in the site. Repeat offenses get them tossed into prison for longer. And maybe prisoners get their own forum to bug eachother (you could call that page "Australia"). That's a half joke... it's probably not a good idea. Probably.

Possibly a spammer at work.

I know that. It's not a reply to any of my posts. It's an invitation from Jeff Hadfield to do a survey, as shown by the full subject line I posted.

If it's a spammer, he's REALLY good at forging mail headers, including routing inside CP. The IP addresses look legit.

It's my mistake -- I forgot to check the survey duration before I sent out a second round of survey invites last night. CP has been really slooooooooooooooooow this morning (say the last 3-4 hours), to the point where both my browsers and I gave up. [I would have been really cheesed if I hadn't saved a copy of a post that took 4 shots to send.  ] It's better now, but still not its usual zippy self. Other sites are OK (all over the planet) so I don't think it's my end.

3 hours ago we had a database issue which has been resolved. I'm currently working to move a bunch of stuff to a different server so you may see minor weirdness, but most likely you won't notice a thing.
Is the slowness still happening? If it is then it's a separate issue because everything's running nice and fast according to all the current monitoring.

It happens if it takes you too long to finish the reply. If I copy my reply, and then go back to the post I was replying to, and reply again by pasting my reply into the edit field, it works.

yep, it is a known feature, and has been reported before; it basically tells you to think and type faster, and use fewer and shorter sentences. I guess the disks are filling up.
