You are absolutely right, questions like this are not inappropriate but rather may be considered badly worded; the writer merely needs some guidance as to how it should be done.

Just clcked on Improve Question and got an error message - sorry, I didn't record what it said but something along the lines of the error has been recorded.
Going back and looking again it's obvious that the question was locked for editing by another member. IMO the error message should be a bit more informative and reflect that as it gave no clue.

Perhaps you got a different error?
The error message for a question being locked for editing is:
Error: This file has been locked for editing

I replied to this[^] thread in the lounge, purely for the joy of getting away with using a**hole in a post  , only to find that I was thwarted.

I think subject line and body text are both handled in a similar way. The problem, dear Henry, is the filter, like the CP search engine, gets easily fooled by plurals. It seems word oriented, and the checklist contains singulars only, so it can't keep up with your multiple naughtinesses.

in a forum, when A replies to B, B gets an e-mail notification. OK.
when A replies to one of his own messages, nobody gets an e-mail. However it is probable A made a mistake and did intend to answer another message; therefore I suggest A answering A causes a warning (maybe a MessageBox) "you are about to answer your own message; nobody will be notified; is this really what you want?" before he composes the answer.

I think a message along the lines of "You are about to reply to your own message. Is this really what you want?" would be enough.

Actually, it often is a beginner's mistake. So maybe a MessageBox is better (or at least one if the author is inexperienced, say by some rep value or message count).

I was editing this[^] question to try to get the <pre> tags to work. I clicked submit and the preview was fine, so I submitted again but when Q&A came back the code had gone.
Is it possible for someone to retrieve it?
