I am a .NET programmer I have only written windows forms apps against of mySQL. I am needing to move into doing some web dev for several reasons. What I would like to know is what technology/technologies should I learn? I am thinking ASP.NET, JavaScript and XML but I don't really know enough about web dev to make a educated decision about it. The first application I will be writing will be a small intranet for submitting problems, phone list etc the next app will be a web interface written using the business logic from a .NET windows app.
So...
Why use ASP.NET why not?
Is there a better alternative to Javascript?
Any reason to learn VBScript?
What about HTML 5 will that eliminate the need for any of these?
PHP?
JSON vs XML?
Now WHAT ABOUT WPF!!!! AND SILVERLIGHT!!!!
This is the reason that I have actually avoided web development. There are way to many choices and you can't make just one it has to be some combination of these.
Any help is appreciated.

A broad topic with many branches, too broad for a simple answer. It depends on skills, environment, requirements, etc., etc.

HTML 5 isn't supported on most browsers so don't even consider it yet

WPF is WINDOWS Presentation Foundation and obviously doesn't apply to web development

Hi,
It all depends on what your goal is. If you are wanting to use windows as your operating system, then you should definitely use ASP.NET. Have you ever heard of ASP.NET web services? If yes, then those will do the trick for you. That means, you can make your architecture to be service oriented. Since your application is a commercial application, I presume that it has been systematically categorized in to a Database, Data Access Layer or ORM, Business Logic Layer, Service Layer (if any) and presentation or the UI layer. All the projects accept UI layer are .NET assemblies and UI is Windows Forms project. You can make the service layer as a .NET assembly or a service. If you have this classification, then you can simply add a web UI layer and use the the same database / business objects from the browser. Ofcourse that is if you decide to use ASP.NET...which is the easiest approach. But if you want to make the task more challenging then...Good luck.
If, however, there is any change in the OS or the environment, then you might consider other alternatives like HTML (supported versions) along with Java script, AJAX, XML and all. There is a lot of help provided by google to use javascript and other languages and technologies for web development. However, their main languages for business development remain Java and C++.
In my opinion, if you want your performance to be gr8, stay away from php and other dynamic languages for server side programming. php however provides a good help for development with 100s of starter kits available and can be used if there is not going to be a great deal of traffic (requests) for your web application.
There is more to tell...yet it will come to you by the way of research. So put your head down and get used to terms in web technology. Some of them are Server side and client side programming, Caching, Sessions, Cookies, post backs, http handlers, hits, requests, responses, url mappings and more...they are not technology specific. Since you have developed n/w oriented apps on windows it will be easier for u to sight the differences...

Hi All,
I'm looking to create some kind of class or library that will manage multiple SSL certificates in a live web API scenario. It should be able to enumerate a cert store to find at least two SSL certs and then work out which one to use at any given time.
The basic premise is that the API should be able to support more than one SSL certificate. So when it comes time to renew an SSL certificate you can simply let the API know there is another one (via config) and when the web service switches to the new server certs, it will recognise that and automatically switch to using the new corresponding client one.
Is there anything in .NET that already does that or has one been created already by a third party?

But I mean how to create the video internally from which drop down menu I do it and from where to get the navigation forward, backward and play buttons. This is readily available in a program like a swish max but here I can't find it?

Available in Swish max by writing small instruction codes in actionscript like play(), stop().

ok that is what I do. I'm spending now over 4 hours just searching for my answer. I worked with frontpage and I know that its main purpose is publish a website. So it does hyperlinks, insert external videos and pictures, make any effects or arrangements to text. But this is really strange and I can't find an answer making research on Google provide me the basics to do what I mentioned before but not my question.

Get the Expression Studio trial.
Once you have built a silverlight
video project you can include it
in your FrontPage project.

I know how to put an external video into frontpage
I can use insert menu and insert any type of video or insert flash video of type .swf.
but my question is how to create video internally and as I mentioned above I made a lot of research with different keywords and I don't get ananswer?
If you could help me I'd be so thankful.

The reason why you've had an abrasive answer is because Frontpage cannot be used to make videos. Which you really should have picked up from 4 hours worth of looking, hence the irritation from other posters. It'll make the webpage you can view it from, it won't make the video.

I was asked this question in a job interview and I wasn't able to answer it so there must be a way to create a video from within Frontpage as they insisted in the interview to do it from within Frontpage. Thanks for your answer anyway.

I've worked with frontpage for a couple of years and I have never heard of this, nor seen it within the help, it simply doesn't do it, Frontpage is an html editor, not a video creator or similar, it just makes html. Messily but that's all it does.
Whoever asked you this was a tool or they phrased the question badly. The closest you can get is to include an ActiveX video componant from the hosted website files rather than one from an external. I don't even think Sharepoint Designer would (which is what I believe Frontpage became, someone can correct me on this), in fact I'm pretty sure it wouldn't.
To sum up: It's not possible and continued insistence that it can is fruitless.

i'm using window.location.href...
properties used...
assume these values...
ex:1

ex:2
<SCRIPT>window.location.href ='mailto:test@test.com?subject=c#&body=Hello'</SCRIPT>
example 1 is working fine...when i come to example 2 to, it displays email and subject till '#' after that nothing is displayed...
whenever there is a hash from that point nothing is getting displayed...but i need to display #...
any ideas to overcome this issue....i'm using I.E...
