What impressed me about the iTampon was how this vaporware product has raised my eBook prices by 50% without even being in production ! Way to stick it to us Jobs !

Computers were large, expensive, clunky and difficult to program. The users were connected via massive CRT green (or sometimes amber) monitors and everything was in text and done via forms and ALL processing was done at the SERVER - with every tube plugged in, little more than dumb-terminals.
Some pretty bright folks back in the late 70's thought, 'Hmmm...wouldn't it be cool if you could package the power of those computers and put them right in the hands of the users... right on their desk tops??'
Suddenly, the age of the PC was born. They were sluggish and had almost no video capabilities to speak of...the high-end cards were Hercules that could run Flight Simulator on 4-color screens (omg red, green, blue and yes! White!) AND monochrome monitors!
Shortly after that, along came the portable PC (well...more luggable than anything else since they weighed in at close to 30 lbs!) They were sluggish, had almost no battery life and broke your arm hauling them around and the worst part?? The FOUR INCH screens!!!!
Over the next two decades the PCs (both desktops and laptops) got more and more powerful with the monitors and video cards getting faster and faster, producing more and more vibrant colors and video experiences - each PC infinately more powerful than what we used to connect too via tubes with today's billion color cards and wide-screen monitors the user's experience is almost breathtaking at times.
But now we seem to have a NEW group of would-be bright folks. All they seem to want to do is create web-applications. Forget the power of the PC! Lets have the SERVER do all of the work...with the users connecting via browsers that are quite frankly little more than dumb-terminals...oh and here's the good news! You can use the apps on your (wait for it...wait for it...) on your PHONE!!! Which are sluggish and have almost no battery life and the best news of all?? a TWO INCH SCREEN!!!!!!!!!
Sorry folks but the i(insert whatever here) is little more than computers coming full circle. I'll perfectly happy with my PC and have no need to plug in to anything on the web while I'm on a train or plane or car or bus or wherever I happen to be that's not within range of my keyboard and when I'm at the coffee shop - it's to buy a cup of coffee...not to sit and pretend that I'm socially important because I happen to have the latest computer with a screen so small I need 3x reading glasses just to see WTF I'm doing!

Don't agree. The iPad sports quite a bit of power. It's sort of like a 2002 high-end PC with no keyboard, but that you can carry everywhere. That's extremely cool in my book. These things are like the old laptops in their day: huge potential, and it's silly to judge them on their first version! I'm looking forward to what's coming in that department. Desktop PCs have plateau-d on the other end...
I'm predicting that you'll have as much power in a very small iPad like tablet as in a full blown desktop PC very soon (like 2015).

Seriously. For me, this will follow me around the house. I can listen to music, show my pics and vids to my family, look up a recipe, keep a running shopping list, type a quick letter while I watch TV, watch TV, movies, read a book, etc. etc. etc. And the screen is big enough that I can actually do those things in a way that doesn't feel confined.
On top of that, the LogMeIn app will let me check up on my work computer when I really need to.
I'm buying one the minute they're available.

When I see people in online forums already having strong "emotions" about the device which has not yet been released, I will say that the initial marketing campaign for the device has been successful. Strong emotions is a good thing in marketing and Apple marketing gets points here.
People saying that it is just a over-sized iPod, my question is what else it was supposed to be? That was exactly the point to have a device to fill the gap between phones and notebooks. The web browser in iPhone is very good but a bigger screen is always welcome. I can see several places I can use this device. The main advantage is that like a phone it does not need to be switched off nor does it need to be booted up in order to be used. Just put it in stand by and open and start using the device quickly when you need. Another impressive thing is the accessory that can help it orient in different ways.
Now as far as success or failure is concerned, it will be clear when first batch of people start using it or people try it in the store. Because of the hype more people will be tempted to at least try it in an Apple store. (I will definitely try it). My personal feeling is that it will be more successful in version 2 (next year).
Will I buy it as a user?
Probably not as I don't have any need so far.
Will I buy it as a developer?
Yes. I do thing that there is a business potential for this device in some areas.
Does this device impress me?
Yes! As I am tempted to try it when it comes out.

I'm not so impressed with the iPad, but there were many fine MP3 players before iPod, and many cell phones before iPhone. We'll see if Apple can popularize the tablet where others have failed. It's more expensive than a notebook and missing capabilities of a notebook, just like tablets before. However, the OS/UI isn't desktop oriented like MS did with their phones and tablets.

I've been using an Acer convertible tablet PC for about 5 years, and I still love the form factor. It's got all the functionality of a notebook, with the intimate experience of a tablet. When you're using it in tablet mode, it doesn't feel like you're working, and browsing the Net is just great. The handwriting recognition is unbelievably accurate.
My next purchase is a multi-touch version of the tablet. Given the capabilities of a tablet PC, I don't see why you would restrict yourself to the limited capabilities of the iPad. Single tasking? Who single tasks, these days? At the very least you want music while you're working...

It's to big for an MP3/Mp4 player.
Too exspenive for an ebook reader.
Not enough features to replace netbooks/tablets pc's
And I bet you have to use Itunes along the way.
I think it's a new toy for those who must have everything or have to much money to spend.
Why is it when you are busy everyone whats it yesterday, But when your not no-one has any work for you?

Trust me, in a couple of years everyone has an (i)Pad on his breakfast table.
You ll no longer buy a (news)paper, but rather register at an online news channels n download your information(book)...

IMO without multitasking = pointless.

And, anyone has seen the specs in the apple site? Operating temperature up to 35° for the iPad. Completely useless to read ebooks on the beach, or for anything during the greek summer.

There's a lot of opinions already, most of them are inclined to believe that iPad is mostly oriented to end up with your mom/dad. I.e. people who don't know how to handle a computer.
It's like previous poll - it's result is fairly obvious from the beginning thanks to our professional orientation. Tech savvy people will mostly pass iPad by (and IE6 too!) because we know their specs and their limitations. Now, your ma is pretty much stuck with what she used first and knows how to deal with, and she will not give a second thought about upgrades or "better" things.

Looks elegant but ....
I don't see how this will replace getting a book at a library which is free. I usually read a book once as opposed to music that gets played over and over and over again. I love listening to music from 40 years ago .... but don't usually read books from 40 years ago. Tend to be interested in the latest books. And when I rarely do buy a book, when finished I give it away or pass it on to friends. AND I LIKE TO READ IN THE BATHROOM! The iPAD just doesn't fit into this book use model which is common amongst the people I know. Not afraid to drop a book .... but would be deathly afraid of dropping an iPAD .... It is easy to carry a pocket book around ... in a pocket etc ... but the iPAD is just too big ..try stuffing that in your backpack .... If I am wandering around or driving ... I would prefer an audio book that I can put on my iPOD.
So I will wait for Version 2.0 or 3.0 when they finally combine the iPhone with the iPAD. Don't care for the name either .... liked iSlate!
