Well, it all depends on the format, and if it's licensed crap or not. I totally agree that you should not go buy e-books that you can not copy around and can't read on other devices.

I think its quite good but it should have also this:
- Camera, one front, one at the back, for video conferencing
- A real Multi Tasking OS (Mac OS?) not the iPhone OS
- A little higher resolution to play native 1080p Videos
- Much more Storage, min 256GB
- At least some (1-2) normal USB Ports
- A little more battery life (20+ hours, so it works for a few days or long flights)

There are three types of gadgets in my book:
1) proper PCs (needed to do work)
2) Mobile phones (needed to make calls)
3) Landfill - gadgets that keep geeks happy until they get bored with them, ultimately ending up as landfill.
The iPad is type 3.

I am not impressed with the device as a whole. They really need to have a camera and support for video streaming on sites like Hulu / Youtube / Netflix. Not necessarily flash, but support for video streaming from these sites. They could provide some type of alternative that does not require massive new code on the part of such sites. (E.g. some sort of video streaming proxy that takes the flash streamed video and turns it into something supported by the iPad or something else useful).
The speed of the device is impressive by todays standards, the battery life is good, the touch sensitivity seems to be good (if it's as good at the iphone, then it's good). Multi-tasking I could see going either-way (need it, want it, don't really need it???).
I would like to get one of these for my wife who would absolutely love it until she tried to watch something from Hulu / Netflix, then she'd be ticked off. I have no problem trying to push HTML5 and I have no love for Flash, but at least for today, video streaming via Flash is a an important web feature.
I like the minimalist nature of it (e.g. no USB, no SD card, minimal local storage) as this would be great for my wife who doesn't want the complication of such things. There are probably 20 websites that she frequents and once she had icons on the desktop for those she'd rarely need a keyboard.
For myself, I don't think I'd like this device in the long run. I currently have an Archos 9 tablet and I am working on a slate tablet based software application so I have some experience using these devices. The Archos 9 is very nice in terms of ergonomics and design, but frustrating in terms of performance. Archos almost got it right. If they could have used a better touch screen and faster processor/more memory, I would love the device. As it is now, it's OK, but not great. Windows 7 runs fine and with some tweaks is quite useful as a touch-only OS. Certainly I wouldn't want to run Office on it, but that's not what I see it as useful for.

I do agree with this, but don't dismiss the iPad just yet because it's currently lacking these. Unlike the Kindle it does have a development platform and people can make these apps. I mean you can already watch streamed HD YouTube videos on it. I just see it as a matter of time before the rest of the popular sites catch up.

I certainly won't dismiss the device. My hope would be that Hulu, Youtube and Netflix allow for HTML5 video delivery which would open up access on the iPad. The problems as I understand it is that HTML5 video does not really have a mechanism for introducing ads, particularly interactive ads, which is critical to these sites profit model.
As for flash on the iPad, as I understand it, the problem isn't Adobe. The problem is that Steve Jobs hates flash and refused to allow support for it. He claims that Flash is buggy (have to agree with that), a resource hog (right again) and not necessary (can't really agree with that right now, but maybe in the future once HTML5 is fully supported.).

The less "parts" you can lose the better it is.

I used to agree with this, but I've since found out you can also just use your finger to take notes. Granted, maybe some people still want a plastic stick to haul around, but it's better than nothing.
