Instead of letting people vote on the responses, why not just allow the guy who asked the question mark an answer as "the" answer? Voting on quick answers is kinda pointless. They're either a correct answer, or they're not - there are no degrees of correctness. Once an answer is selected, further responses should be disallowed on the question.

IMO there are degrees of correctness, one can specify scope, add alternatives, and in general add relevant information.

Because he is the one who did not know; maybe one answer did solve the problem in his particular circumstances, but isn't the real answer to the question in general. Wasn't QA meant as a kind of wiki, a knowledge base?

I only read code that is properly formatted, adding PRE tags is the easiest way to obtain that. [The QA section does it automatically now, I hope we soon get it on regular forums as well]

Here I would say that an answer can be partially correct meaning it solved a part of the problem but not entirely (or caused another error that the person asking the question only saw after voting).

Every answer has the possibility of having a better way, so I think adding another response should not be blocked since somebody might come along and say 'hey I had the same problem, fixed it a different way because the 'answer way' has the possibility of going wrong under certain circumstances'.

Yeah, that's kind of annoying. Would be neat if Code Project prevented them from seeing the next answer until they voted on the previous answer. So, the first answer would be free. But they'd have to vote on the first one to see the second one and on the second one to see the third one and so on. That'd probably be abused, but maybe we can think of something similar that would be abused less.

This is precisely what the 'Accept Answer' button is for. Only the OP is able to see and perform this task.

Like others have mentioned I too agree that there are degrees of correctness. Sometimes there are even two equally valid answers. Though this is highly dependent on the narrowness of the question.

The forum's seem to be acting up.
The width of the forum isn't adjust anymore, the forum width is now fixed.
Happens only on Chrome (IE / firefox seem OK)

The Question Answer count is now enabled - however it appears to be showing the wrong count. Is this a bug or just something to do with the hamsters being drunk today.

Would there be any milage in having links to videos posted by members, a bit like an article, grouped by catergories and searchable (possibly via tags added by the poster). The videos could be rated by users and moderated in the normal fasion.

Just a little one, but it's one I use all the time.
We appear to have lost the bold indicator of new messages in the forum list on the left side of the display. My correct "last login" time of yesterday evening is shown and I can click a forum and the forum contains new messages, as indicated by the little yellow new, but the list doesn't contain the bold. It was fine last night.

Seems like not completely.
They are bold now but only the text seems to be a link, I seem to remember that the whole 'bar' used to be a link (I could be wrong here, my memory is failing me more often than not).
(Also the 'update' for filtering the forum messages seems a bit odd but I don't use that one much so don't know if its intentional or not. )

A post on the Lounge yesterday (GMT +7) [^], titled "Kinds of Red (a very short story)," by Ravel H. Joyce, is, I think, an interesting "edge case" in terms of the norms of behavior on a public forum.
My first reaction was that the "story" was a jape.
The first thing I did after reading the "story," was to Google on a fairly distinctive phrase in the story to see if it might be posted elsewhere on the web. The only "hit" was to the OP.
Next, I looked at Joyce's profile on CP, read a few previous messages : they all looked "straight" to me. Seeing Joyce had posted a lot to the SoapBox 1.0 didn't raise any flags for me, perhaps because I never went there, and never read SoapBox content (just not my cup of tea).
But soon after I decided the OP might be a real cry of anguish, and posted my response, posts by Damien S and Christian Gauss stated that the author was a teenager, and implied the story was a "fiction."
In this case the title including the words "short story" does, I think, put a little wiggle-room in making the case that enough of a hint was given that it might be fiction.
As a creative writer myself, I admire this post as "fiction," by the way. The writer has some real talent. While it's my personal opinion that using the God-given gift of creativity to manipulate people's emotions in this manner is a "mistake," and probably reflects some real psychological problems in the writer (or, at least, "immaturity"), I can't question the OP's "right" to do that.
And, I don't mind being made a fool of, making a mistake in evaluation in the cause of compassion : I'd rather make that mistake than make the mistake of cynicism where it later turns out what I did not believe happened to be "true" !
If I were moderating a bulletin board with an "open discussion" area like the Lounge, I don't know if I'd allow this kind of "emotional chain-pulling" jape or not : it comes pretty close to the "threshold" of an area which I think would be "intolerable" : like reporting on someone's death or injury as a joke in an "unambiguous" way.
I'm not "reporting" this message or its author; I'm not saying this post and its responses are a "site bug" ! ... but, I'm just interested to hear how other people on CP view this type of post.
The "paradoxical" effect of this post, was the very touching response by Pete O'Hanlon, and the sharing that followed that : I certainly find "value" in that.
