There's a command line tool called wmctrl which allows you to interact with the windwows manager, and it allows you to resize windows programmatically. It might be the tool you're looking for.

You can install it via yum or apt-get or source, depending of course on the distro you're using.
Then you can resize a window with:

wmctrl -r "window title" -e 0,-1,-1,width,height


It won't let you specify number of columns and rows, but will only work with pixels, so I hope it will be ok with you anyway. Smile | :)
