In response to a recent blog entry[^] by Josh Smith where he talks about the default scope of XAML variables, and how to change them to private, I've updated MoXAML PowerToys[^] to automatically search for elements in your XAML with the x:Name attribute set (and without the FieldModifier set). Any matches automatically get x:FieldModifier="private" added to them.

Hello All!
I'm trying to test a WPF application which displays most of the information using DataTemplates. The problem that I'm facing right now is that data in the template is not visible neither by the UI Automation framework nor by the UISpy tool.
Has anyone seen this behavior?
Suggestions are appreciated.

I am also facing the same problem. Seems 'Project white' or UI Automation framework for WPF is not stabilized. Seems some IBM automation test tool captures events of WPF which UISpy cannot.

Is it possible to assign a resource to another resource? For example, if I have a SolidColorBrush named MyBursh01, can I make a MyBrush02 that has the same values as MyBrush01, or can I make a Rectangle named Rect2 and make it = Rect1?
I am referring to making it in XAML not C#

Hello All,
How can I use the DataGridCell Template with WPF Toolkit Datagrid. I like to create a Cell Template and like to apply that template for all cells.
For example:

Can I use "." in Binding? As the column will be generated dynamically based on the Data Source, I don't know the column name. So, I want to set whatever column that I got to the textbox.

Is it just me or is anyone else very much dismayed at the lack of real line of business capabilities of WPF?
I am producing a line of business app, which early on was decided to use WPF. Admitedly this was partly my decision, because the client needed a windows solution; my background was ASP.Net development so I thought the nearest thing would be to use WPF. Having been around for a few years I never dreamt that it would be so poor.
I have hit so many stumbling blocks along the way. Working for a small client, in the middle of a recesion, they do not have the budget to purchase every third party tool and utility, so I have had to work with what Microsoft makes available in .Net.
Firstly, I got hit with the Datagrid. Not being released until late October, i still get an error trying to add a combobox to it. I am waiting for version 2. the (free) Xceed grid is not much better, with its own (different) set of inadequecies.
Now, I thought that any line of business application would require some sort of output. I need to produce invloices. The requirement is that one or more invoice is printed at one time; each one consists of a customer, seller brand, page header, items, and sub totals, etc. (typical invoice stuff). There seems to be no reporting mechnism in WPF. I have tried Crystal, but apart from hating their run-time deployment issues, and the fact that it doesnt seem to work with LINQ, I am at a stumbling block there. I have tried RDLC in VS 2008. Fortunatly that works with LINQ, but the designer seems very weak, and the functionality of the whole thing is not a patch on Crystal (I hate to say). I have considered building XAML but I need to export to Excel, and have page headers. I am at a loss and the sh-- it about to hit the fan.
Is this just me being stupid? Because WPF seems great at funky, good looking demo applications; but not true line of business apps?

Have you tried SQL Server Reporting Services? It's free and works great.

I have tried SQL Reporting Services. My App is deployed locally on client laptops using SQL Express, so I think I am limited in what I have available. When I compared the two offerings within VS 2008; SSRS and Crystal, I found Crystal to be more flexible. I liked being able to bind SSRS reports to LINQ, but thought the flexibility of grouping and custom formulas in Crystal where more important.
Does that make sense? I was wondering if I missed something with SSRS, because it just seemed so basic to me.

I've used SSRS since it came out, for complex systems. SSRS has custom formulas and grouping. Also, you can use SSRS on Laptops. You can also use the Report Viewer Control and create the reports locally and not even install SSRS on the laptops. Check out the TWO modes the Report Viewer Control renders reports.

The scrolling functionality offered by WPF ScrollViewer is only avialable at runtime. Is there a way so that I can
get the design time scrolling facility. So that I can scroll and see the controls in the container window. Can Customizing the control provide the desired design time scrolling facility. Is there any way I can get design time scrolling facility?

I am wanting to create my own custom tooltip that I have control over. Basically, I want to tooltip how soon it comes up and how long it stays up as long as over the control. I know that in .NET 3.5 they finally added the TooltipService that allows you this control, but still using .NET 3.0. On my controls of interest, I was taking over the MouseEnter and MouseLeave and then attempting to open a Tooltip or Popup. StaysOpen is false, and I set the IsOpen=true to show.
I have tried using both Tooltip and Popup controls and have similar problem. Problem is that when I set the IsOpen=true on the tooltip/popup, that they take over the mouse capture. My original control gets the MouseLeave event and the TT/popup gets the MouseEnter. If I move my mouse over another control, I would like these to close, but since the TT/popup has taken over mouse capture, then nothing I can do bug re-click again back on the main window.
I would like to emulate how the current WPF tooltip works, or extend it if possible. i.e.g it pops up but does not affect the mouse capture, other controls on the form still get MouseEnter/Leave events.

Well, after some more research I found out that the TooltipService is available under 3.0, so this solves most of my problems. Though, it seems that the ToolTipService.BetweenShowDelay doesn't do what I really expected. I have tooltips for items in a listbox that does require some time to retrieve. One issue that I was having is that when moving the mouse down over items, it would try to retrieve the tooltips for almost each row in the list as I was just moving the mouse down. I set the BetweenShowDelay to 0 to try to force the tooltip to always use my InitialShowDelay, but this doesn't seem to work.
I think I am mostly ok now, I am able to have some more control over the tooltips.

Im trying to write a image from a database to the hard drive and then read it back to the Image Control.
Im getting the error: The process could not access .........\temp.jpg because it is being used by another process
I have a the same app in Winforms and there its simple just put Picturebox.Image.Dispose before you attempt to write over the old file. But in WPF it won't work. I have spent hours trying to figure this out, tried to dispose a lot of resources and Google. But could not find anything.
I don't want to read the picture to the memory because it uses a lot of it.
If someone could help me it would be appreciated, Thanks

Instead of writing the data to a disk file which gets locked, why not just feed the stream directly to the image.
I Googled the below code snippet, should get you going.

What does writing the file to disk get you? Is there are requirement to do this?
Is there a reason to persist the image from the database to the disk, then read disk and load into Image?
After you read the image from the database, it is in memory. That's why is suggested that solution.

Well I have a reason: the images loaded into the memory uses a lot of memory.
reason here is the same to save memory. Its better to write the single file to the disk and keep overwriting it until the user closes the application. Then it will be deleted

When you set the Image.ImageSource to your file, you are reading it into memory. You can read it directly into your image instead (and overwrite as needed). All writing it to a file before loading it into your image does is create the additional overhead of the File I/O operations.

How im I reading it into the memory in my code?
The big problem is that If I set imageStorage.Source = null; the source is null but the picture still has a height and width which means the its still in the Image Control?? thats the strangest part. I think if someone would suggest a solution here, it would work.
